“Hi Ada. How have you been?”

My eyes flared, Saint… he spoke to me. And all I could do is blink and stare at him like a love-struck fan girl at a Justin Bieber concert.

Smooth Ada…real smooth.

Ada

So much for liquid courage.I mostly just nodded at everything Saint said… well that was until I caught Noah standing off to the side alone. He waved me over and I practically ran into his arms. I knew I was safe with him, he was funny and cute. And I would be lying if I said I didn’t love that he flirted with me. When Noah started talking about the pranks he pulled on his brothers, Lexi came over and chatted with us.

“Did you want to come get some snacks with me?” Noah asked, I shook my head but Lexi nudged my shoulder with hers. I gave her a “what?” stare but she just gave me a knowing grin.

Noah said he would be back in a minute, and once he was out of eat shot, she wiggled her brows at me. “He is flirting with you Ada.”

I looked back to where he had gone and back to her, I smiled. I know…

“But he is too young for me.” It was true, he was just being friendly and he was almost sixteen. He had told me that many times as if that would change my mind. He was two years younger than me. I couldn’t date a younger guy, that would be… well I didn’t know. Lexi shook her head.

“That’s what you say,” she nudged my shoulder again.

“Mmm...” I didn’t know how to answer that and I could see him coming back towards us. I tried to hide my smile from Lexi, but she caught it. His big grin made my chest grow tight. Dang… why wasn’t he older? No one had ever flirted with me before, so he was a first. But he was too young, so that wasn’t helping me at all. Especially since I might have been flirting back with him at times. Which I should stop doing, I didn’t want to lead him on.

When Noah returned, he handed me a small bowl with some mixed fruit. “Yummy, thanks.” I took it and popped a blueberry in my mouth.

“I’m just going to see if I can find Ranger.” Lexi told me as she walked off. My attention returned back to Noah, he had that goofy grin on his face.

Noah started talking about how he tried to start a band with his friend Luca last year. He said it was bad… because none of them could sing and Noah could play only the most basic songs on the keyboard. Luca has no musical talents at all. I laughed, “I can’t play or sing either. I would be terrible in a band.”

I felt a chill in the air, the alcohol not enough to warm me up. A lot at the party were feeling the effects of the alcohol, but I was glad not to be. I wasn’t about to get drunk in front of everyone.

“Are you cold?” Noah asked. I nodded and he stepped closer, his body so close to mine that I could feel the heat coming from his body. His hands came down to my upper arms and touched my bare shoulders. He rubbed his warm hands against my skin. Wherever he touched came alive, and my heart raced. This… this was what friends did? Right?

The feeling just from his hands was affecting me down low in my belly. I knew what it was like to be worked up, I was a teen with a sex drive and I owned a vibrator, thank you Destiny for introducing me to that little pocket rocket. When his warm breath hit my ear, I felt a shiver run though my body.

“Oh, you’re really cold.” He mumbled into my ear. But my body was reacting to him being so close and I wasn’t cold anymore. Oh no, this wasn’t good. I should walk away. I said I would stop flirting, was this flirting? Not really, but it was also not saying we were just friends either.

When he slowly embraced me in a hug, I sighed. I brought my hands up between us and placed both palms on his huge chest. He practically engulfed me. I was so small and he was so big. I liked this feeling. I felt so safe in his arms, like he could protect me from the world. I would just hug him, just for tonight. Tomorrow I would set boundaries.

I was lost in his arms when I heard an ear-piercing scream. I knew that voice.

“Lexi,” I called out as I pushed myself from Noah. I looked to the woods, oh god. Did she go in there?

“Help. You need to help her.” I shoved Noah as a bunch of other guys ran forward. I blinked when I saw her hair fly past us and into the house. Wait. I rubbed my eyes and felt Noah’s presence behind me. He wasn’t touching me but he was there, so close I could feel his body heat.

“Did… did she just go past us?” I looked up at him. The look on his face read like an open book. It was her, and wow that was fast, whoever was running with her. But when his eyes fell on mine, I could tell it must be bad.Oh shit.I pushed away from him and ran to the doors. The blinds were now pulled down but I could hear her and others. She was in there. She needed help.

The scenein front of me played out like a movie as I walked into the living room of the Lovell’s house. Maverick and Rafferty were sitting beside Lexi, who was whimpering in pain on the white rug, her leg had blood on it. Mr Lovell—the twin’s father— was shouting stuff. Ranger was pacing, his hands on his head and Mr Donovani was here too. Maybe he had still been lurking in the woods and found her.

I got up close to Lexi wanting to tell her everything would be okay. I think the ambulance was on its way. Mr Lovell had his phone out. But when her eyes rolled into the back of her head, I gasped.

“Lexi, Oh my God. What's wrong with her?” My hand flew to my mouth, I choked out a sob. Was she in shock from the wolf bite? Her body started moving strangely, was she having a fit?

“Is she dying?” Maverick asked… to who I didn’t know, but how could she be dying? She couldn’t be. It was just a bite, right? Was it rabies? Is that what he meant. I didn’t know what would happen if a wolf bit you. I always knew they could attack but there had never been a wolf attack here in… like well. Ever?

Jett Lovell rushed into the room, his hands were balled into fists and the way his jaw gritted tightly I thought he would snap some of his teeth. I was taken back by his scary demeanour. “I’m going to kill him.” He growled out. The wolf? He was going to chase after it. Shit, no that was a bad idea.

“No, we deal with this now. This isn’t the way it was supposed to go, and she isn’t responding in the usual way. Galen, do you think you could give her some of your blood?”
