“Ranger Lovell?” I asked, making sure that was who she was referring too, not that there was another Ranger at the school. She nodded.

“Yeah, he is like the player of the Kiba boys. Well… actually that might be wrong, I have never seen him with a girl at school. And Olivia flirts with everyone, so I’m not really sure. But I think they hook up at the Lovell parties. I can’t be sure though as I have never been...” Crap, maybe she liked him, I just thought she should know. He was a huge flirt, but when he smiled all that would melt away because he was just so good looking. And he knew it. Although she didn’t seem affected by his charms, so I was a little confused why she was asking.

“He invited me to a party,” she shook her head and turned back to Mrs. Jeffery. My mouth dropped open, I closed it. But wait, did she just say she was invited to a Lovell party?

“Did you seriously get invited to a Lovell party? By Ranger personally? Oh my god, can we go together? Like, can you take someone? Like me? They usually allow a friend to come.”

Okay to be honest I didn’t know if they allowed friends, but you would assume they would want you to bring one. I had never been to a single party here at all, and everyone knew that being invited to a Lovell party was a big deal. Destiny’s best friend Kiara was dating two guys from Rawlins, so she was never invited and neither was Destiny. It was as if being associated with Kiara made me off limits to Lovell parties. Well, I was thinking about it that way, because the other option I didn’t want to think about.

“No, I’m not going.” Lexi started to tell me… what? Why? My eyebrows rose. “I…I have a curfew.” I let out a breath and slunk a little into my chair. That sucked, I guess it was a foster thing because my parents would let me.

“Do you still want to hang out and do our assignment tonight? I can take you to my place? I just have to ask Grayson first.” I nodded, a huge grin on my face that you couldn’t wipe off. I watched as she texted Grayson, her foster dad, and when she nodded, I squealed.

“Oh wow, yes. I can drive us there, so you don’t need to catch no sticky ass bus.” I was so excited; I quickly texted my mom and Destiny to let them know I was going over to Lexi’s.

“Can we give Raff a lift?” I looked over to Lexi and wiggled my brows suggestively. He was so sexy and had that mysterious thing going on. But he was kinda her foster brother too, okay he wasn’t kinda… He was her foster brother. So I wasn’t sure how that worked. She rolled her eyes and smiled right as the bell rang.

“Come on.”

I couldn’t believeshe was in the car with me, along with Raff. Oh wow. He didn’t say a word, he just got in and I drove them to their place in Kiba. It was a cute little suburban house.Like mine. But I could see this house backed up against the woods. One day I wanted one just like it, I love the trees here, nature. It was a lovely place to raise a family. As long as the woves stayed away that was.

When I met Grayson—Lexi’s foster dad— I was surprised at how nice he was, and he had baked muffins. They were still warm when he offered me one. She told me she had a foster dad named Jack too, but he was at work.

“It’s so nice to meet you Ada, if you need anything. Milk, juice, just help yourself.” Grayson offered. Raff had disappeared into his room as soon as we got there and I met little Josh. Lexi’s younger foster brother.

“Do you likeTeen Titans?” he looked up from where he was lying on his belly on the floor, swinging his legs behind him. He was adorable. I nodded.

“I do, I don’t watch it as much as I could. I do my homework after school, but I think it’s awesome. I love cyborg.” His little face lit up when I mentioned one of the characters. I had caught the show a few times, I did really like it. It had things in there for older people and it was funny.

“I like you.” Josh smiled up at me. Grayson chuckled and I felt special. “I like you too.” I replied before Lexi told him that we had homework to do, but she would play with him later.

Her room was nice, it was blue, and she had a purple fluffy pillow, some deep purple sheets and was that a lock on her window? I quickly looked elsewhere I didn’t know what to say about that and I didn’t want to point out that I’d noticed it. I wasn’t sure what the deal was with foster kids and I had been meaning to watch that seriesThe Fosters. I thought I might get a better insight into the whole thing. But I was still binge-watchingTeen Wolfevery night.

“I love your room.” I could see her shoulders relax a little. I’d said the right thing. She must have been worried about me seeing it. So I made sure to point out the cool fluffy pillow.

“That is so adorable, where did you get?” She smiled at it as she picked it up and stroked it.

“Jack, he got it from Walmart.” I watched her body language, I was starting to notice things about her, what she was closed off too, what seemed to open her up more. She liked this pillow.

“Oh wow, did they have it pink? I want one for my room. It’s pretty and soft.”

She smiled and nodded, “yeah, Jack was going to get me pink. But I’m a purple girl.” I opened my bag and took out some books and placed them on her bed. She sat down on the other end and we started talking… and not only about the assignment.

Our favorite colors, books, movies… this girl was amazing. I laughed with her and listened to everything she had to say. Lexi was officially my best friend.

She just didn’t know it yet.

I had kind ofcornered Lexi in the cafeteria yesterday and told her I could come to the Lovell party with her, in case she was allowed to go. I had asked one of the juniors that lived in Kiba and he said that girls bring their friends all the time. So now it was official. I could come if Lexi went. But she told me she couldn’t go still, and it kinda sucked about the curfew. Because Grayson seemed so easy going, I couldn’t believe he was so strict about this. Like couldn’t he let her go out for a couple of hours? Maybe it was Jack, her other foster dad, that was strict. I hadn’t met him yet.

I was determined to change his mind today, so I thought it was a great idea to bring over a suitcase full of Destiny’s clothes and some make up. Just in case he changed his mind, and we could go tonight. Then we would have some party clothes ready to go.

We had made plans to watch movies today instead of going to the party, mostly romantic comedies, and stuff our faces with ice cream. And just hang out like best friends did. So far, she still liked me and she didn’t have any other friends. So, I was her best friend. We just hadn’t done official titles or stuff yet. And okay… I may have bought a “BFF” necklace, but I left it at home. Because it seemed silly once I was packing my bags to come over.

But I was sure I could convince these foster dads to let her go to the party. She wanted to go, well I felt like she did. She just didn’t want to get in trouble, I assumed. Maybe that was why she had that lock on her window… and her door.
