“I’ll see you while I’m on the plane, I’m sure. I get really nervous when I fly.” His words vibrate against my lips. “I’ll have a book with me, and you can read from where I left off.”

“You’re leaving tonight?”

“Yeah. It’s less busy and quieter. My sister is picking me up later. She’s too excited about me coming home to be annoyed I’m disrupting her sleep.”

I let out a short chuckle, sighing when Sal pulls up outside. “There’s my ride.”

“See you later, baby. I can text when I get off work instead of on the app.”

“I like the app,” I gripe. “Makes things more exciting.”

Laughter erupts from him, and I really have opened up a floodgate. One I hope never closes again. Not when what’s rushing out is more refreshing than water.

“Okay, we’ll keep talking on the app. However, changing it up with the phone now and then isn’t a bad idea.”

“Fine. We can start off on the app, and you can send me sexy pictures before moving to the phone.”

“Sexy photos before calling, huh? I think I like the direction this is headed.” He waggles his brows and I huff out a laugh, glaring at the door when there’s a loud honk.

“I better go before Sal leaves without me.”

“Bye,mi sueño hecho realidad.”

“Bye.” I leave him with one more kiss before walking out into the sticky humidity. I don’t have to look at Sal’s face to know he’s annoyed with me.

“Sorry,” I say, looking at my hands pressing into my knees.

“Mmm,” is all he says, turning onto the road and playing music to drown out the loud silence between us.

My phone vibrates, and I laugh when I read my new message.

Kyvian: So much for staying professional, you little minx. I saw that kiss. Right in front of my poor books too.

Me: I don’t know what you mean.

Kyvian: Right. Did you forget I’m an incubus? That lust that was rolling off the two of you was like a tasty little snack.

Me: Whatever.

Kyvian:So, if he got to see you today, does that mean I get to see you the next time you swing by?

Me: This isn’t joint custody, Ky.

Kyvian:Yeah, ’cause if it was, you’d both be hearing from my lawyer.

A sound crawls up my throat and Sal shoots daggers at me in the mirror. And I thought Elias was grumpy. This man doesn’t only take the cake, he takes the whole damn bakery.

Twenty minutes later, we arrive on base, and I rush through the portal after signing in, pulling out my phone to check for a new message. Nothing new comes in from Elias until I’m relaxing in my bed, counting the new stones I picked up between the portal and base. They really go perfectly with my collection—some sparkle more than others I have as I scrub them clean. It’s a new hobby I picked up recently after seeing how different everything is on the other side.

I collected leaves and flowers outside the hospital, setting them up beside different types from outside the base’s gates. Next time I venture out to collect sand for Sandy, I’ll see if I can make some time for a quick trip to a lake with a beach area so I can compare the tiny grains. I’ve done it with jars of water too. Mud. Dirt. Tree bark.

My room has become some type of museum of natural elements and tiny living organisms. Elias won’t find it so empty next time he’s here. My stomach shrivels in on itself. If there is a next time. There’s always a time limit on these things. Mesneaking into his thoughts without him realizing will have him pushing me away like the others soon enough. I want to be wrong. I really, really want to be wrong.

Drying my hands, I set down the toothbrush I have no other use for and read my message.

I Am Sleeping: Hi, baby. This is me messaging you here first, and here’s my sexy picture.

I giggle, heat spreading between my legs as I bring the screen closer to get a better look at the tip of his cock peeking out from beneath his towel. My mouth waters, and as I’m about to type, another message comes in. His phone number.
