“Are you going to kill me now?” I whisper against his dry, cracked lips.

He shakes his head against mine, moving his hand in my hair. “Not today, maybe tomorrow.”

I laugh and crash my mouth to his. Our clashing tongues are off rhythm and our teeth collide more than once. Our kisses are messy and rough, but so is this thing we share. This form of passion, obsession, and possessiveness. We break away pantingand I can feel his heartbeat fast against mine. “I thought you died.”

“You thought wrong.”

“But how did you—”

“Let's just say I had some help.”

“Your brother?”

“No, mi padre. But Gabriel and Mateo do have Bobby and I can promise you he won’t be going anywhere.”

“Your dad? He's alive?”

“Yes, now pick up your pants and let’s go home. We need to rest for tomorrow. We have a huge mess to clean up and probably will have more men after us soon.”

“What if I told you I was tired of fighting?”

“The only other way this will go away is if you disappear for good.”

“Then I'll do just that. What if we made sure the next time I die, I stay dead?”

“What are you saying? If we don't fight them, they will never go away.”

“You and I both know we can't kill them all. I think it's time I walk away for good and this time, I do it on my own.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I'm ready to die so I can live.”

Angel smiles, his teeth so white, it becomes apparent in the dark. “Then let's go live together.”

We hurry out of the shed. I grab Santiago's mom and shove her inside of it with Manivela's dead body, clasping the lock shut. It's time she learns what it's like to be stuck in a room with a rotting corpse. I figured leaving her here overnight wouldn't hurt.

All her men are dead. No one knows to look for her out here and no one knows what happened tonight, not yet, but when they do there may be problems. Not necessarily because these people give a shit about Bobby or Leila being dead or taken down, more from them not getting what they were promised.

Bobby and Leila had formed alliances and made promises that will no longer be fulfilled. I'm not even sure what everything entailed, but I bet some of it had to deal with this mystery money Jose supposedly hid away and probably everything they thought they would get from Mateo and Santiago being dead. Only none of that happened and there was never any money found.

I'm starting to wonder if it even exists. We both get into the truck, adrenaline pumping through my veins, causing my hands to shake against the steering wheel. I become more relaxed when Santiago’s hand squeezes my thigh.

Never did I think his touch would be anything other than revolting, but here he is, providing waves of comfort with the weight of his hand. The silence between us is as welcoming as his touch. It’s what we both need right now. After spending days filled with noise and chaos, the sound of his soft breathing is my consolation.

When we reach the house, Santiago stares at the door and then at the road behind the gate. I reach for his hands, taking them in mine. “Soon. I promise. There are things we must do first.”

He smiles and we both exit the truck at the same time, but he doesn't walk toward the house. He stops where he is, stripping off his clothes.

“What are you doing?” I ask, amusement laced in my tone.

“You're going to fuck me right here and now. I need you to.”

I tilt my head to the side. “Since when do you make demands?”
