‘Omega,’ I said softly.
Sebastian looked terrible. There were huge shadows under his eyes, and his skin was dull and sallow. It seemed as if he’d lost weight since the last time I saw him; his pyjama shorts hung low beneath his hip bones. His lips were swollen and chapped.
He was still more beautiful than he had any right to be.
‘I gave permission for you to come, but I wasn’t sure whether you would.’ It was clear he was still deep in the haze: his pants tented over his crotch and his usually clear blue eyes were cloudy. He didn’t look wholly real; he was an alpha’s dream come to life; a fantasy made flesh. ‘If you run again, there won’t be another invitation. I won’t let you hurt him – hurtus– a second time.’
‘I understand.’
His eyes fixed on the bag in my hand. ‘What did you bring?’
I pulled out the containers of berries. ‘Some fruit and some drinks. Would you like some?’
His eyes narrowed. ‘Are they a gift?’
I blinked. ‘Not a courting gift. I want to get you something better than berries for that. But theyarean offering.’
‘So youarecourting me?’
My lips curved up. ‘I think we’ve messed up the proper order of things, but yes. I’d like to. If you want that.’
He appeared to consider it. ‘Are there raspberries?’ he said at last.
There were, so I offered them to him. His long fingers carefully took a couple and popped them between his heat-ravaged lips. He closed his eyes as the flavour hit his tongue.
‘Shall I make you a drink?’
He nodded, so I found a glass and some ice. When he sipped on it, his eyebrows rose. ‘Elderflower?’
‘It was my sister’s favourite. She always wanted it, especially during her heats.’
‘Was her scent as sweet as yours?’
I swallowed against the pain that came with that question. ‘Marshmallow,’ I said gruffly. ‘It used to make my nose itch.’
And fuck, I missed it.
Sebastian hummed and drained the glass dry. I took it from him, shivering as my fingertips brushed his skin, and made a second glass.
My alpha derived such a primal satisfaction from watching him eat and drink the things I’d offered that, for a few minutes, I felt calm. I couldn’t help my scent from rising, though, still weak from the blockers in my system. I saw the moment Sebastian caught it; his body went tight as his lips parted, and he inhaled raggedly, his chest expanding. His eyes flickered to meet mine as his pupils blew out.
‘Alpha.’
Cherry filled my senses. ‘Can you eat a bit more, Sebastian?’
He shook his head. ‘Not hungry for food.’
I licked my lips. ‘What about a shower?’
He thought about it for a moment. ‘Only if you’ll join me.’
I guess I walked into that one.
Sebastian took my hand. My skin tingled at the touch; heat spread through my limbs as he tugged me towards the bathroom. His skin was fever-hot, almost scalding. I followed him, but took over once we walked through the bathroom door, running the shower and making sure the temperature was right before I turned back to him. ‘Do you need –’
I faltered as he stripped off his shorts and I was left with a very naked, very aroused omega.
My nerves screamed back into existence.
