I pulled my fingers from her, listening to her squeak again as I slid her underwear down, then pushed her knees apart and settled between her legs. She didn’t look much different to a human woman, so I lowered my head and licked.

She bowed off the bed, whimpering. I slung an arm across her hips to hold her in place, then did it again.

‘Maeve,’ she gasped.

‘Tell me what you want. What you need.’

‘That,’ she moaned. ‘You.’

My heart skipped another beat.

I dipped my tongue inside her, more for my sake than hers. ‘Fuck. You taste like sugar,’ I breathed. I licked her all over, before narrowing in on her clit – herbud– and flattening my tongue, my fingers questing back inside her to find her notch.

Either I was better than I thought, or Tirian bodies were more receptive than humans were, because it took all of twenty seconds for her body to tense and clamp down around my soaked fingers.

‘Maeve,’ she shrieked; I licked her until her thighs started to tremble. It was mostly for my benefit; I couldn’t get enough of her taste.

‘I want to eat you for fucking breakfast,’ I murmured.

‘Maeve,’ she said again, wonderingly. I toyed with her bud for a moment, lingering until she started to shake, then dragged myself up her body, stopping to suck her peaked nipples before seizing her mouth with mine. I lowered my weight carefully, then tentatively pressed myself against her.

She threw her head back, panting.

‘Is this okay?’ I ground out.

‘Green gods, yes,’ she hissed. ‘More.’

I wasn’t going to argue.

I rolled my hips, grinding myself against her, panting as her hands came up and skirted over my ass. The touch sent a fresh wave of heat through my body and I came a few moments later, gasping for air as bliss rippled through my core. She pulled me down and held me tight, sighing into my neck. I shifted onto my side so I wouldn’t crush her; she ran a hand over my stomach and let it rest on my thigh.

‘That was …’ she began dreamily, but she trailed off before she specified.

‘Are you all right?’

She blinked heavily, then fixed her eyes on mine. ‘I don’t think I’ve ever been better.’

Unaccountably, I felt my cheeks go hot. I searched desperately for something to say, for something safer, something that didn’t make my chest constrict in a way I didn’t want to think about. ‘What will you do today?’

She rolled over; I swallowed down disappointment as she stood, then bit back satisfaction as her trembling legs stumbled. She looked down in surprise at her unsteady feet, then shot me a wide, glowing grin.

My heart decided to forego skipping, and tried to launch itself into my throat, instead.

Don’t do it, Maeve. You’re here to save Tessa.

‘I’ll take my bonded to see my heartree,’ Elswyth said.

‘Report,’Igrowled.

Adair smirked. ‘Something wrong, First Guard?’

Poppy ignored both Adair and my foul manners. ‘Ewan is waiting in the Forest, sir,’ she said in her soft voice. ‘The Hamadryad and the human were planning on seeing the heartree this morning.’

I gave a curt nod. Ewan was a good choice. ‘And during the night?’

Poppy hesitated, but Adair didn’t. ‘All quiet until this morning, sir,’ he said smugly.

I fixed him with my best cold stare. ‘And what happened this morning, Third Guard?’
