Lenka raises an eyebrow in our direction, and I gesture for Cam to turn around so I can catch him and get Lenka off our backs.

He’s so light. And damn it, his hair smells amazing again. When are we going to stop with this stupid exercise?

“Don’t worry. It was an accident,” I tell him. “It doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. Friendly.” I try to correct myself, but I have no idea if he buys it or if I come across as a creep.

Cam turns to face me and his eyes widen.

“Dude! I kissed you. That was hella inappropriate. I don’t know how we can be…friendlyafter that,” he whispers.

Lenka crosses her arms and raises an eyebrow, navigating closer to us, and I almost want to shoo her off. Can’t she see we’re having a conversation here? I know we’re meant to be working, but come on.

“Of course we can,” I tell him. “For the record, my best friend? I caught him jerking off in college the first time we met.”

Cam rolls his eyes, but he does smile.

There it is. Finally. A brief appearance of the real Cam.

“Come on. Who hasn’t caught their friend touching themselves?”

“Well, I didn’t just catch him. He literally came as I stood there at the door,” I tell him.

He stares at me. I stare at him. And we burst into laughter in sync.

The rest of the cast turns to look at us, but I can’t even give a damn.

Cam is laughing, and it seems like we can put whatever happened last night behind us. That’s all that matters.

“No fucking way. That’s… that’s hilarious,” he cackles.

“And I never let him forget it,” I assure him.

“I wouldn’t, either,” he adds.

“Are we interrupting?” Lenka appears beside us and stands with an amused look between us.

“Sorry,” Cam apologizes.

I don’t.

I’m the fucking director. I can do what I damn well please. Even if she’s the one paying my salary.

“Right. Let’s get back to the exercises,” I say, trying to compose myself.

It’s slightly easier with Cam back to being his confident young self again. Thank fuck. Directing a show is already hard enough. The last thing I need is an actor who can’t even look at me.

It’s the small victories, I guess.

And of course I try to convince myself that’s the only reason I care about Cam’s smile.

CHAPTER4

Camden

Autumn standsby my door as I get somewhat dressed, tapping her foot impatiently.

“Come on,” she says.

“Okay, okay. Just give me a minute. Jesus, what’s wrong with you this morning?” I yawn and throw on a pair of shorts and yesterday’s T-shirt.
