“Oh, just go into your room already,” Yaya snapped at me.
Those ladies were planning something. And I’d be damned if I didn’t find out.
For now, I went up the stairs in search of my boyfriend. He’d stayed behind—not that he was needed at the grocery store. Hell, even I wasn’t needed—to clean the room and do our laundry, although I very much doubted he’d done either of those things.
These days he was too obsessed with video games to do any housework.
Would you believe it? A future king addicted to gaming.
I sighed and opened our bedroom door.
Yup. As expected. No work done.
The laundry basket was still overflowing, and the floor still needed sweeping. But surprisingly, the bed was made.
And on top of it was something I hadn’t seen in a very long time.
A pink, stuffed unicorn was sitting regally in the middle of the bed, an envelope wedged between its paws and mouth. The stuffed animal we’d won at the arcade almost a year ago.
Where on earth did he find it? I thought it’d been lost between his move from London to Elysia. Or from Elysia to Cedarwood Beach.
We’d agreed that we were going to have as normal a relationship as possible, and Cedarwood Beach seemed the ideal place to stay away from the spotlight. Most residents cared more about the local gossip of who was cheating on whom than what celebrities were in town.
It had been a whirlwind of a school year. Living with August and my birth mom in my family home. It was strange, surreal, and fucking awesome. It was great to be surrounded by loved ones, and we had so many here.
Andy and Kyle often had date nights together, whether in the house or out in town, and we’d stay up late to play some couples board games while Kyle fixed us concoctions he deemed cocktails, which I was sure would be illegal if served with the alcohol volume of each sip.
Dad had finally stopped traveling, setting roots at home once again. We had Mom to thank for that. She finally gave him the peace of mind he’d been looking for all over the world.
I walked up to the unicorn and grabbed the envelope. It was sealed with wax and had August’s coat of arms engraved in the set seal.
I’d learned a thing or two about the royal life since getting with August. Some days it was hard to believe that he’d be king one day and I… I would be his prince. That was the stuff of fairy tales.
But that was my life nowadays. A fairy tale.
I may not have a real, white horse, but I have this unicorn. Happy first anniversary, Lucas.
PS. Will you look out the window?read his note.
A smile crept up in my face, and I set the card and envelope down and petted the stuffed animal.
First anniversary, huh?
Had it only been a year ago when we first met? It felt like a lifetime ago. So much had happened.
“What have you done, August?” I muttered to myself as I got up and walked over to the window.
My room had a view of the side of the house where there were trees and foliage galore, but when I looked out the window, that wasn’t the only thing I saw.
There was a big, white horse—a real one—and August was on it, holding the animal’s reins and looking up at me.
What—
I rushed to open the window, not entirely sure Iwasn’tdreaming.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
He grinned from ear to ear as he replied.
