“Who the hell are you?” I asked.
“I should be asking you that question,” she yelled. “And just so you know, I’ve called the police. They’ll be here any second.”
I grimaced and crossed my arms.
“Oh good, then I can tell them you’re breaking and entering.”
“You’re breaking and entering,” she said in a very defensive tone.
“Uhm… I think not. This is my house,” I said.
Not entirely true, but it did belong to family.
“No it’s not. It’s my house,” she said.
Oh shit. Had I come into the wrong house. The woman was wearing pajamas and slippers. But no. How the hell would I have opened the door if it wasn’t Leo’s house?
“Earth to crazy lady, this isnotyour house,” I said, injecting much more confidence into my voice.
“Is too,” she retorted in a clear New York accent.
“Okay, so we clearly think of each other as a burglar,” I said.
“I don’tthink. Iknowyou are,” she said.
“How did you get in?”
“With my keys. How didyouget in?”
I looked down at the kitchen island and my set of keys, and so did the crazy lady.
“Oh,” was all she said. “So… who are you?”
“I’m Leo’s brother. And you are?” I said.
Crazy lady lowered the candlestick—who carries a candlestick to face a burglar, anyway? What is this? Clue?
“I’m Leo’s friend. And neighbor,” she said.
I nodded. She nodded. We stared at each other for a moment and then we burst into laughter.
“The douchebag didn’t tell me you were visiting,” she said. “You scared the crap out of me. Do you know how many paps have tried to get an exclusive on him since he got that role?”
Ah yes. My big shot Hollywood brother and his famous superhero role that had sent the internet in a frenzy.
“Sorry,” I said, although I hadn’t really done anything wrong. This one was on Leo.
At least guns weren’t prevalent in this country, or this could have gone a lot more awry than it had.
“I’m Beth,” she said, putting the candlestick on the kitchen island and reaching her hand over to shake mine.
“Luke.”
“I should… uhm… get out of your hair.”
She turned around to leave.
“I was just about to order food. Want to join me?” I asked.
