Itook his hand and felt the flutter in my chest. My fingers tingled with anxiety and excitement.

He was gorgeous tonight. Not that he ever wasn’t, but he… he looked delectable tonight. Handsome, composed, sexy.

He was wearing his new suit, which consisted of a pair of black trousers, a black shirt, and a black suit jacket with golden floral patterns. And a matching tie, of course.

There was no one in this room like him. There was no one like him in this world. And tonight, I was presenting him for everyone to see. To see that he was mine and no one could or should mess with him.

His free hand rested on my shoulder and mine rested on his waist, and off we went, twirling around the put-together dancefloor, a rainstorm of flashes snapping our pictures, all eyes on us.

I’d been so afraid all my life that I’d end up miserable that I never even contemplated my future could be with a man. That I could be with someone like Luke.

The last few days had been a nightmare and blessing all rolled into one.

The kinds of stories they were writing about us, about Luke, infuriated me as much as they saddened me. I only hoped after tonight the worst of it would be over.

Our affair had ignited a controversy between the Elysian government and church. While the prime-minister and his party supported my decision to come out, the church was less than happy.

They’d been fighting for ages to overturn the new legislation that allowed same sex couples to be married. The church and its antiquated views had been so ingrained in Elysian society for so long that the idea of a rift between it and the government dominated the local news.

But as Ginny had suggested, the Elysian people had proven their progressiveness by supporting me, supporting us. #KingAugust had been trending for a few days on Twitter, and the homophobes, who had started another hashtag, #QueerPrince, had been overtaken by people posting photos of the iconic singer instead. It was actually quite funny.

“That went well, I thought,” I said.

Luke smiled brightly, and my entire body warmed.

“It was beautiful. You did a great job,” he said.

“I couldn’t have done it without you.”

He grimaced, and I laughed.

“How? You wouldn’t even read your speech to me,” he asked.

“Because you were my inspiration and motivation.”

Luke shook his head, grinning from ear to ear.

“If you’re trying to charm me to get into my pants, you don’t have to.”

I raised an eyebrow and arched my neck back to stare at him.

“I know. I’ve already gotten into your pants.”

At that he gasped, and I felt the brunt of his slap on my chest. From the corner of my eyes, I saw a few sniggers from some guests.

I wanted to bite back, but we were in the middle of the public eye, so it would have to wait for when we were in private.

I did, however, pull him closer to me. I wanted to pull him even closer until we were glued together, but that wasn’t appropriate. Besides, my mother was watching. Not to mention the rest of the world.

“What do you think they will write about this tomorrow?” he asked, throwing a glance at the reporters in the room.

I squeezed one eye in thought and hummed in thought.

“Let’s see. Black man seduces wimpy prince to a sensational dance?”

Luke shakes his head.

“Nah, I think it’ll probably be Black homosexual man makes a pass on wimpy prince in public.”
