“I’ll have a glass of white wine, if you have it,” Beth said.
Luke nodded, and Fisayo opted for the same.
“Perfect.”
As I retreated to the bar, I heard Luke speak up.
“What is it you do here? Is your name Nonny now?” he asked.
Fisayo laughed, and I looked up to find her holding his hand on the table.
“No. Not at all. I’ve worked for… August’s family for a long time. I was his and his siblings’ nanny. Now I… uhm, I help with the house,” she said.
“You must really love him if you’re still working for him,” Beth added with a smirk, and Fisayo turned to look at me over at the bar while I picked the wine.
“Of course. Auggie and his siblings are… they’re like my children.”
She paused for a moment and turned to Luke.
“I… I don’t mean—”
Luke raised a hand in the air, and I paused on my way back, unsure what he was going to do.
“Please. Don’t feel guilty. You have nothing to apologize for, and I’m not mad at you for what you did. It’s all behind us now.”
That was a very mature thing for him to say. Not that he’d shown he wasn’t. But usually these things went a little bit different. At least they did in films. But I guess films weren’t real life now, were they?
“How many siblings do you have?” Luke asked as I poured Fisayo’s wine first.
“Five. Three brothers and two sisters,” I said.
“That’s a big family,” Beth said.
“Sure is.”
I poured Beth’s glass next, and Luke’s last. When I was done, I poured some in mine and raised it in the air.
“Here’s to family reunions,” I said.
“And new beginnings,” Luke added.
“All right. Who’s hungry?” I asked once we all took a sip.
Fisayo tried to stand up again, but I walked around and put my hands on her shoulders to sit her back down and smiled at our guests.
“I can give you a hand if you’d like,” Beth said.
“Oh no. Don’t worry. You’re a guest just as much as your partner,” I said.
Luke choked on his wine, and I turned to look at him while Beth started laughing.
“Did… did I say something wrong?” I asked.
“We’re not together,” Luke offered.
“Yeah. Definitely not,” Beth said.
“Hey, you don’t have to sound so grossed out by the notion,” Luke protested, and I held back a chuckle.
