Boy, a man could get used to this sort of treatment.

“Okay. Then, I know exactly where we’re going next,” I said. “It’s time to meet my family.”

Twenty-Eight

August

Ishould be panicking. I was panicking.

I’d never met anyone’s family before. I’d never really had a serious enough relationship to warrant meeting the parents. I’d never had a relationship, full stop.

So the mere fact that I was about to meet Luke’s entire family…

That was scary.

But at the same time, nothing could be scarier than coming all the way here only to be rejected by Luke. And I hadn’t been, so I was sure whatever happened next, I could take it. With him by my side.

My Lucas.

“They can be a bit much, but I promise you they’re harmless. For the most part,” he said.

“I'm sure I can survive it,” I replied.

Nikolas drove off, and once again I took in the scenery of his hometown. It was pretty. It reminded me of home, if home was more Americanized.

I was glad his home was so similar to mine. It meant he’d probably enjoy Elysia when we visited. And I couldn’t wait to show it to him. Just like I couldn’t wait for him to show me Cedarwood Beach.

Nikolas pulled up on a long drive with a bunch of cars lining it, and Luke took me up to the porch.

When we entered, my eyes landed on a large family tree on the wall made of picture frames.

Luke paused in front of it while I looked at every photo. Toddler Luke was adorable. And child Luke was so cute. He pointed to a picture of his adoptive mom, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw a photo of her with him in her arms, genuine smiles on both their faces as she attacked him with her kisses. They were so adorable together.

“Come on. Let’s see who’s home,” he said and dragged me to the back of the house and into a kitchen.

Fisayo was there, a pitcher of iced tea in her hands and sunglasses on her head. She was on her way out into the backyard when she saw us.

She almost dropped the pitcher.

“Auggie! You’re back!” she said, setting the glass jug on a counter and rushing to take me in her arms.

I squeezed her tight. I’d missed her.

“I'm so glad you're here,” she said.

I watched Paul through the window taking notice, and he got up from a sun lounger and came inside.

“So am I,” I replied.

“August!” Paul said. “What are you doing here?”

Luke took my hand and raised it in front of his two parents.

“He came to apologize,” he said.

Paul’s eyes widened.

“Does that mean you two have made up?” Fisayo asked.
