And here I’d thought Justin was just a possessive dom. He wasn’t. He was just a wuss masquerading as an alpha male.

“So when uncle said he was retiring… I thought ‘there’s my chance.’ My chance to escape and be free of him and start my life anew, somewhere he couldn’t follow me or infect my circle with his toxicity,” he said. “So that’s what I did. I left my apartment. I didn’t tell him where I was going, or even that I was leaving. I just left.”

“Why didn’t you tell me any of this?” I asked.

After everything I trusted him with, it was a fair question to ask.

Adam sighed and looked down at the floor for a few moments before looking up at me.

“I wanted to. But I couldn’t… I didn’t want you to realize how pathetic I was. Justin and I have been over for a very long time. He just wouldn’t get the message. He still hasn’t…”

There were so many emotions I was feeling, I couldn’t even make sense of them. A part of me was still experiencing the heartbreak he’d caused me, but another part of me was almost relieved that there was an explanation. And yet another part was hurting for him. For everything he must have gone through for five years with this guy.

“I drove by your house yesterday. I wanted to explain. To tell you all this. But then I saw you with this man, and I thought you’d already moved on,” he said.

His face had gone red, and his shoulders sagged. I didn’t know if it was relief or giving up.

“That was Benji—”

“I know that now. I wasn’t thinking yesterday. I just saw you and drove on. I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I hope you can find some way to forgive me one day.”

My heart, the one that had felt so much torment over the past twenty-four hours or so, fluttered as if it was finally free of it. It pulled me toward him. It wanted him. Needed him.

I took a step, uncertain if I was acting on reason or emotion. Did it even matter anymore?

Before I could reach him, however, the doors connecting the room to his office slid open, and Justin walked in with coffees.

“What is going on here?” he asked, taking a good look at all of the people in the room. “Adam…”

Yaya stepped around the examination table and stopped short in front of him. Quite literally, considering he was twice her height.

“Adam’s dead,” she said.

Justin laughed and looked at Adam.

“He’s right there, old woman,” he said.

“I don’t think you understand me. He’s deadto you.”

“Are you crazy, woman? Go away,” he said.

“Who are you calling crazy?” I shouted.

He looked up at me and the recognition shone in his eyes.

“Dead. To. You,” Yaya insisted, poking Justin in the chest. “Unless you want to feel my full Greek wrath, which has left many a-man dickless.”

My eyes opened wide, and I choked up the laugh that threatened to come out. Yaya didn’t swear often, but when she did, it was usually epic.

“You heard the woman. Time to go,” I said, crossing my arms and stepping up between him and Yaya, and Adam.

“Babe, what the fuck is going on? Who are these weirdos?”

“They’re not weirdos,” Adam said behind me. “You need to leave.”

“Leave now,” Yaya shouted.

“Babe, are these weirdos your patients? Do you want me to call the police?”
