He tried pushing me off him. He tried to punch me back, but I blocked him and forced him back. He hit the back of his head on the wall, which seemed to make him angrier.

And which was why when he started growling, using his anger against me, I did what any self-respecting man would do to end this once and for all. I kicked my knee up his groin and watched the man give in to the excruciating pain.

“Now you can call the police,” I said, turning to look at Ava.

“You’re a dead… man,” Justin wailed from the floor. “I’ll tell them what you did.”

“What? You mean how you attacked us and started punching around?” Benji asked with a wide smile.

“That’s not…”

“Well, that’s what I saw,” Benji said and looked at Yaya and Ava.

They nodded so nonchalantly that I felt a little bit concerned for all of them and how much joy they were taking from this.

As Ava pulled her phone out of her back pocket, I turned to Adam and smiled. He started walking toward me with slow, hesitant steps.

“I think that will do the—” I started to say but didn’t manage to finish.

He attacked me with his lips and pinned me against the wall. Justin tried to stand up, but Adam kicked his nuts with the heel of his foot without even pulling away from our kiss, and the douche collapsed on the floor again.

It was like our own scene from Cursed Hearts, minus the magic and the swords. The adrenaline running through my body, making everything feel more intense, almost surreal.

Boy, I’d missed his taste. That mouth. That body. I’d convinced myself I’d never had any of it again, but here we were.

“Thank you,” he breathed when he pulled away. “All of you.”

He turned to look at everyone.

“Mrs. Karagiannis, if it weren’t for you… How didja know?”

Yaya put her hands on her hips and looked from Adam to me.

“Well, for starters, you need to call me by my name. And that name is Yaya for you. Second of all, Mel isn’t stupid. This boy on the other hand,” she stared at me. “Wouldn’t listen. And then, of course, when your mom called me, I knew something had to be done.”

“W-wait. Did you say my mom called you?” Adam asked.

“She did. She couldn’t get here fast enough, so she wanted to make sure justice was served,” she said.

“You’re not a superhero, Yaya,” I said. Although, I was pretty sure she would make a great one. Maybe I could pitch it to a comic book writer.

Super-Yaya. She’ll curse your dick off!

“I beg to differ,” Adam said. “But that’s so embarrassing.”

“Hey,” I said. “There’s nothing embarrassing about family helping out when you’re in need. I wish I still had my mom around to meddle and look out for me.”

I offered him my hand, and he smiled. I couldn’t believe I could hold it again. That I could stand next to him. That I could love him.

“You’re right.”

“So, this is the doctor that stole your heart. I guess I approve,” Benji said.

“You guess?” I raised an eyebrow.

“Well, yeah. I still need to understand what happened. I could only hear half of what was going on through those doors. You might want to invest in thinner ones. And he still needs to pass the Benji test.”

“The Benji test? What the fuck is that? I’ve never heard of the Benji test.”
