“When you know, you know,” he said. “And I know you’re the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. Mom approves. Yaya approves. So… will you spend the rest of your life with me?”

My jaw dropped and my breath stopped.

I’d expected a lot of things from the party. But that was one thing Ididn’texpect.

Was that what the thumbs up in the car was all about? Had Zara been testing me? And who else was in on this? How did he get the fortune cookie done so quickly? How long had he been planning this?

Now it made sense why both his parents had decided to fly in for my birthday when his mom was supposed to get here earlier that week. I thought it was weird at the time, but I just assumed with Justin out of the picture, she didn’t need to come, but I had been surprised to find out both my in-laws were attending my party.

“So…” Adam asked. “Will you marry me?”

This was beyond my wildest dreams. I never in a million years imagined getting married, especially not to someone I only knew for a month.

But…

When you know, you know.

“Yes,” I said. “Yes, I will.”

Adam

7 months later

“Aw, look at the two of you. You look so gorgeous together,” Yaya said.

Charlie straightened his shoulders, exuding that Wade energy he was a natural at, and I couldn’t help but swoon or feel the sense of wonder that I had a man like him by my side. I didn’t know if I’d ever get used to it.

He was wearing the hell out of his white satin shirt and the leather suit jacket and pants. The gemstone rosary hanging off his neck completed the look. But it was his eyes that made my heart flutter like a schoolboy, just as they did the first time I set my eyes on him and like they did every day after that.

“Don’t they look gorgeous, Zara?” Yaya turned to Mom, and so did I.

For all her incessant talking about me getting married and settling down with a decent man, she didn’t look particularly pleased.

“They do,” she said. “But was all this leather necessary? People will think you’ve got a fetish or something.”

Charlie laughed, and Yaya rubbed Mom’s back as if she was in physical pain. Drama queens, the both of them.

“It’s a themed wedding, Mom.”

“Don’t get me started with that schmegegge. Why couldn’t you save the silly themes for parties and events. This is your wedding day, boys. Couldn’t you take it a little more seriously?”

“We’re taking it very seriously, Mom. I assure you. Other than the Cursed Hearts themed costumes and the crystals everywhere, this is going to be a normal, non-denominational, gay wedding with Jewish undertones,” Charlie said and took my hand.

Our wedding day!

I never thought this day would come for me. And not only because of the asshole I’d spent five years with. It just never felt real that anyone would want me as I was, flaws, quirks and all.

But Charlie?

He wanted all of me. Just as I was.

“Fine. Fine. But was the horse necessary?” she asked, looking behind us, making us turn.

The white horse with the horn in his head—to make it look like a unicorn of course—and a white tallis around its neck—a prayer shawl with the star of David sewn on the side—approached us with its master.

Yeah, there really was a horse for the ceremony.
