“I know. I think the same.”

“Is that how you feel about Beau?” she asks.

I don’t expect the question, so it does take me by surprise because I haven’t allowed myself to think of forever after with him, but it’s not so hard to imagine it. Or revel in it.

“Yeah,” I nod. “I just hope he feels the same about me.”

Dolly rolls her eyes.

“Please, honey, even if he hadn’t told you he loves you, the way he looks at you is proof enough. Tell the Gordon up there to shut it.” She points to my head and then to my heart. “And tell this Gordon to come out. He’s been hiding too long. Also, tell this Gordon to take a rest.” She points at my dick, and I bat her hand away.

“He doesn’t need a rest. He’s fine,” I tell her.

“Not for him. For the rest of us. We all starved to death waiting for you,” she laughs. “And don’t tell me you didn’t make a pit stop, because I don’t buy it.”

“It was traffic.”

“Sure. Sure. Traffic. That’s what we call it now.”

“Dolly, and I say this from the bottom of my heart, you’re a royal pain in my ass sometimes.”

Dolly drapes her arm around me and pulls me closer to her face.

“But you love it.”

I shrug, but we stay connected for a while, gazing out into the green, at the other people who have come for some fresh air.

“So, Halloween party?” I ask.

“Slash housewarming party,” she adds. “You, my friend, will need to find a babysitter.”

I pull away from her and grimace.

“What?” she asks.

“You tell him that,” I say.

And so she does. And Beau panics at first, until Dolly explains that it’s just for the night. That he’s not being replaced. It’s just so he can join the party. And that seems to put him at ease.

“But I get to interview them with you,” he says, and I laugh. “What’s so funny? I’m not leaving my little monster with just anyone.”

I raise an eyebrow, and he just raises his hands as if to tell me “what are you staring at? I’m right.”

“I can ask my friends,” Zoe says. “I met this awesome person who’s just the cutest. And I think Elsie will love them.”

Beau turns to her and puts his hands to his hips.

“We’ll see about that.”

It’s so sweet how overprotective he’s gotten of Elsie, I just want to take him in my arms and keep him there forever.

But since forever is still questionable, or impossible to do anyway, I just do the next best thing and step behind him to take him in my arms for the next few moments.

“What?” he asks when I do so.

“Nothing,” I tell him. “I just… love you.”

Beau blushes and turns his head to give me a kiss.

“You guys, when I said bring some cheese, I didn’t mean this kind,” Dolly says, and Zoe, with Elsie in her arms, falls back laughing. Elsie just thinks it’s a new game and shrieks in excitement.

Well, at least they make each other laugh.
