Someone tackled me to the ground and pinned my hands. I thrashed until a blade pressed against my throat.

“Write to Kylo,” one of the turned women hissed.

Angry, betrayed tears burned my eyes. This was supposed to be my new family, my new life’s purpose.

I was supposed to finally belong somewhere.

There was no use fighting. Whoever instigated the initial attack was long gone.

“He won’t answer,” the other replied.

I lay motionless, helpless, for the first time since my shadows had broken free. I thought I’d never feel this weak again.

A man’s feral roar shook the earth.

“Get the fuck off her!”

KYLO

Evie’s heart fluttered through the blood bond. Rage was hot and thick in my blood at the sight of two ofmyclan members on top of her, holding her down with a blade pressed against her throat and a shadow blindfold over her eyes. Mortals ran in all directions in the distance.

The moment they heard my command, the two women ceased. Evie was slow to sit up, her skin flushed, her eyes frantic. When I detected the slightest tremble of her lower lip, I almost fucking lost it.

I’d managed to mask myself before I emerged from the underground, prepared for anything that awaited.

This wasnotwhat I’d expected.

“Explain,” I barked. “Now.”

Claudette cleared her throat, pushing strands of red hair behind her ears as she carefully lifted her gaze from the ground to my wrathful eyes.

“We saw her standing there right before the attack. Then, after, she took off running,” Claudette said.

My gaze shifted to Evie. Her features warred between anger, embarrassment, and something far more wounded and vulnerable. I moved to her immediately, helping her to her feet.

“Are you okay?”

She searched my eyes, and she released a breath when she’d found what she’d been looking for. “Yes. I saw a premonition. Princeton was warning me about something, but I didn’t understand what it was—I only saw the location. So I ran here, but I was too late.” Her voice cracked.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Both women shifted on their feet. I couldn’t tell if they were doubting their initial judgments or merely pretending to in my presence.

Either way, my clan would never dare questionme.

Evie attempted to squash her emotions down as she avoided my eyes. Her fists clenched at her sides. “I saw someone in white, a robe or cape or something, fleeing the area. A man, I think. I had an intuition, so I followed him and then?—”

She stopped herself and glared at the two women.

“He got away.”

The two women exchanged a glance as if fighting over who was going to explain their way out of this mess.

Evie huffed and lifted her arm.

One of the women tensed. “Sheattackedus.”
