I shrug, smiling up at him. “For being you.”
His eyes hold mine for a long moment, something deep and tender flickering in their blue depths before he dips his head and captures my lips in a gentle kiss.
“Ahem.” Cora clears her throat, and I pull back, feeling heat climb into my cheeks. “You two want to order, or should I come back after you’ve finished making out in my section?”
Killer chuckles, not looking the least bit embarrassed. “We’ll order now.”
“Good choice,” Cora says with a wink. “What’ll it be?”
“Double cheeseburger and fries,” Killer says. “And a Coke.”
“I’ll have a single through the garden,” I tell her as I scan the list of sides on the laminated menu. “With onion rings. And a strawberry shake.”
“Make that two shakes,” Killer adds, before looking down at me and popping a brow. “What the hell isthrough the garden?”
“You’ve never heard that before?”
“Babe, ain’t nobody heard that shit before.”
My cheeks warm. “Sorry,” I say sheepishly as I glance up at Cora. “Cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, ketchup, and mustard.”
Cora jots down all the toppings I want on my burger. “No problem, sweetie. And congrats on the new place, by the way. Chief told me you guys moved in this morning.”
“Thanks. Morpheus did a really good job.”
As Cora walks away, I find myself looking around the diner, taking in the aesthetic. This place is kinda cool. It’s got that old school feel you only see in the movies.
“What are you thinking about?” Killer asks, his arm draped casually over my shoulders.
“Just... this,” I gesture vaguely around us. “How cool this place is.”
He studies my face, his expression soft. “Yeah?”
I nod. “Yeah. I can see us coming here on Sundays for breakfast. Or stopping by after work for milkshakes.” I pause, swallowing around the sudden dryness in my throat. “It feels like... like I could have a life here.”
His arm tightens around me, pulling me closer. “You do have a life here, Pet. With me. For as long as you want it.”
The sincerity in his voice makes my heart ache in the best possible way. But there’s something else there too—a shadow, a hint of something unsaid. It’s been there for a few days now, this feeling that he’s holding something back.
But before I can think too much about it, Cora returns with our drinks. The strawberry shake is topped with whipped cream and a cherry, and looks absolutely decadent.
“Food will be up in a few,” she tells us before heading off to check on another table.
I take a sip of my shake and can’t help the small moan that escapes me. “Oh my god, this is amazing.”
Killer watches me with dark eyes, his gaze dropping to my lips as I lick away a spot of whipped cream. “Careful, Pet,” he murmurs. “Or we might not make it to the grocery store.”
Heat spirals through me at his words, settling low in my belly. “Promises, promises,” I tease, feeling more confident.
His lip quirks up in a predatory smile that sends shivers down my spine. “Don’t test me, Memphis. Not when you’re looking at me like that.”
I’m saved by the arrival of our food. Cora sets down our plates, and my eyes widen. Two white plates are piled high with burgers and sides, and my stomach growls in anticipation.
“Enjoy, guys,” she says with a knowing smirk before leaving us to our meal.
The first bite of my burger is heaven—juicy meat, melted cheese, the perfect balance of toppings. I close my eyes, savoring it.
“Good?” Killer asks, taking a big bite out of his burger.
