“So,” he panted, eyes half-lidded, the hazel erased by his blown pupils. “What’s next, rookie?”
“I seem to remember someone promising they’d fuck me against some windows,” I teased.
Kai’s grin turned wolfish as he leaned in, dropping one last kiss on my lips before grabbing my hand and pulling me away from the wall. “You gonna light up the city for me, little comet?”
“That depends,” I replied. “You gonna make a wish on me?”
Kai laughed, pulling me close so his arm draped around my shoulder, his warmth seeping into my skin. “My wish already came true, baby,” he said, eyes locked on mine. “I got you in the end, didn’t I?”
We strolled through the paddock together, the planet’s oversized sun dipping below the horizon behind us, its last warm rays brushing our backs like a gentle farewell for the season.
Kai led me towards the shuttle park where a single vehicle waited, the driver already inside, ready to take us home.
It didn’t matter whether we were heading to Kai’s place or mine—though I was looking forward to being fucked against his windows.
Home wasn’t a single spot anymore.
And thanks to a cocky pro racer who loved to rile me up and drive me crazy every day, I no longer felt like an outsider looking in.
No, what I felt now was pure love and happiness. At least whenever Kai was near. I reserved my scowls for everyone else these days, and my smiles belonged to him.
Kai was my home, and with him around, I knew I’d never feel alone again.
Epilogue
Kai
A look through the window showed the change from deep space to hazy yellow skies as we entered Ithara’s atmosphere. A giant moon filled the horizon, bright enough to provide daylight for twenty hours a day, all year round.
The planet was nice, with its wide open spaces and miles of grassland, but other than some cool animals on the ground and in the sky, there wasn’t that much to see. Not beyond the capital of Luminara.
Though maybe I was biased, because nestled on the outskirts of the city was my favourite place—on this planet, at least. As the shuttle descended through Ithara’s dust clouds, long cracks in the ground came into view, causing my heart to pump a little harder.
Like every year, I was excited for the season ahead. And just like every year, Jax said, “Welcome home, bud.”
But this year . . . yeah, this year felt different.
In the past, my heart had always been wherever the race was, and I’d often dreaded the six months of the off-season before training for the next season began. But my home wasn’t a racetrack anymore, or even the Astro Space League.
Now my home was a certain Iskari, waiting for me in the shuttle park.
We stepped off the shuttle, and I walked straight over to my love.
Rev greeted me with a wide smile, then masked it with his usual blank expression as he nodded at Jax. Butterflies fluttered in my chest, because even after all these months together, he still saved every single smile just for me.
“Miss me?” I asked, pressing a kiss to the top of his head as we made our way towards the paddock.
Jax raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t you see him a few hours ago?”
It was a new season, and I still couldn’t raise a single fucking eyebrow. Rev had tried to teach me after I begged for hours on end, because he had it down to a fine art, but he gave up after my fortieth failed attempt, declaring I’d have to settle for looking like I was having an aneurysm.
That didn’t stop me from practicing in our bathroom mirror.
Daily.
Rev had moved into my apartment two months ago. I’d always thought we’d move into his place whenever the time came, because his was cosier, a proper little nest, and since he was such a homebody, I figured he’d prefer the space he knew so well.
But something had changed his mind, and when I’d tentatively suggested moving in together, he’d said yes and started packing up his things.
