Leticia took a step back and slapped him. “You bastard!” Tears rolled down her face as she strode towards the door.

How dare he do that to me?Leticia stormed through the hallway and up the stairs to her level. Furious and disappointed, she entered her room and slammed the door behind her.

Another woman? That must be it.She felt betrayed as questions swirled in her mind.Who is she?

Jealousy took over and her face turned red. “Stupid, stupid man!” Leticia threw herself on the bed, her face on fire. Lennart was the most handsome man in the bunker, and she felt proud that she managed to catch him. And when he said that he hadn’t even considered they’d become a couple, she couldn’t believe her ears. It was like an insult.

“You are mine!” She groaned into the mattress and kicked her feet.

I’m not going to leave things like this. It’s not over!

Soaking in the bathtub after a long tiring day felt like heaven. Anna added a few drops of lavender oil and inhaled the scent. She closed her eyes and leaned her head on the tiles, reminiscing about happier days. She became nostalgic pretty quickly, and a few tears rolled down her face.

I shouldn’t think about it.

She sighed and washed her face, remembering the events of the day that was about to end: Björn was feeling better, fortunately, but her concern for him did not ease. Lennart was still working on the case which seemed more complex than anyone expected, and many residents were feeling more and more anxious with each passing day, including her.

Anna tried to relax and not to think about anything in particular, but it was hard to tame her thoughts. She tried to distract herself with thoughts of her favorite TV programs or movies she watched long ago. She closed her eyes again letting her head fall back. As she meditated a headache started kicking in.

“Not again,” she muttered and frowned.

While she made her best effort to relax again a sudden loud slam made her jump. Her eyes shot open, and she straightened up. With eyes wide open and glued to the door, she called out. “Is anyone there?”

Anna waited for a few seconds but there was no answer. She thought maybe something had accidentally fallen and made the noise, but she couldn’t think of anything. She never left things where they could fall just like that but considered it might be the cause.

It could make more sense if Lennart or Hugo had come to check on her, as they sometimes did, but since there was no sign to confirm this, she got up, grabbed a towel and wrapped her damp skin.

As she lowered her legs on the rug, she heard notes of a familiar song. She froze, and her heart rate increased.

Johan!Was her first thought.

It had been her husband’s favorite song, but why could she hear it now? The sound was barely audible, she wasn’t crazy. She was sure she could hear it.

Anna headed to the door to face whatever was on the other side. She turned the handle and opened the door wide, ready to chastise anyone who dared to play such pranks on her, but she wasn’t ready for what awaited her on the other side.

Her old bedroom she’d once shared with her husband was lit only by a night lamp. Anna blinked a few times and tightened the grip on the door handle when she saw the figure lying on the bed. Her heart began drumming, but she took a first step forward.

Was I dreaming about all what happened until now and finally woke up?

The music could be heard much more clearly and Anna felt as if in a trance. She continued to walk across the room towards the king-sized bed, each step easier than the previous one.

A smile appeared on her face as she touched the edge of the bed and spoke tenderly, “Johan…”

Chapter 22

Lennart took a deep breath and rang the doorbell, but he didn’t wait long. The door opened and he saw Leticia’s surprised face. In the blink of an eye confusion disappeared from her features, and she barked, “What do you want?”

“I came to apologize.”

Leticia held his gaze without moving. Lennart feared she wouldn’t let him in, but her eyes narrowed, and she stepped to the side.

She closed the door behind him, but Lennart remained at the doorway. Leticia took a few steps forward, turned to him again with her arms crossed.

Lennart looked around, then fixed his eyes on her. “I couldn’t leave it like this. Leticia… I–” he trailed off and shoved his hands in his pockets.
