“Ryosuke tried to kill himself.”

A surprised look appeared on Hugo’s face. “Kill himself? How?”

Lennart crossed his arms. “With a fork.”

Hugo shook his head and looked at Ryosuke’s lying figure. “Could there be some reason for that?”

“There are many reasons why people try to take their own life, but in this case it’s very peculiar timing. I would need to ask him about it.”

Chapter 26

The doctor entered the room and approached the bed to check Ryosuke’s current condition. Lennart, sitting next to the bed, looked up and noticed the doctor’s puzzled look.

“You’re still here?” the doctor asked.

Lennart nodded.

“He has already received two thirds of the blood, and for now there aren’t any complications.” The doctor examined Ryosuke’s vitals.

“Does it mean he’s stable now?”

“Yes.”

Lennart’s tensed muscles relaxed. Finally, some good news.

The doctor left Lennart alone with his own thoughts and the sleeping Ryosuke. Lennart took a sharp breath and leaned his elbows on his knees, staring at the floor as countless questions swirled in his mind.

Who is responsible for Scarlett’s death? What really happened to her?

He looked at Ryosuke again. Why did you hit her? And why did you try to kill yourself? Is your attempt connected with her death somehow? Were you involved with her after all?

The idea that Ryosuke was in some sort of relationship with Scarlett stirred his blood. A pang of jealousy reminded him of his repressed feelings toward this man. Lennart clenched his jaw.

While he examined Ryosuke’s sleeping face he noticed Ryosuke’s hand twitching. The young man opened his eyes and blinked a couple of times looking around the room in confusion. He tensed when his focus shifted to Lennart.

Lennart held his breath, but his heart was jumping with excitement and joy. He looked into Ryosuke’s eyes and saw unreadable emotions cross his features.

The bright light in the room made Ryosuke blink a couple of times. For a moment he didn’t know where he was or what had happened, but when his senses registered throbbing pain in his wrist, he remembered he should be dead.

He looked around and noticed someone’s presence beside him. When his eyes landed on the person, the realization that it was Lennart hit him like thunderclap.

Ryosuke stared, unable to utter a word.

What is he doing here?

Lennart looked back at him and broke the silence.

“You’re awake.”

Ryosuke wanted to say something, anything, but he didn’t know what. He swallowed hard, and only then did he notice how dry his mouth was. He parted and licked his lips to moisten them, buying time.

“Yes, I’m awake,” he said, breaking eye contact.

I failed.

“Why did you try to kill yourself?”
