“I couldn’t take a long break. When I start something, I finish it.”

“I’m like that too, mostly. But I had to distance myself from work a little bit.”

Elin glanced at Ryosuke, and Lennart noticed it, so he said, “Let’s go for a walk.”

Ryosuke remained standing in the middle of the room as jealousy began gnawing at him. It’s related to work, stop overthinking,he reminded himself, hoping he is right.

Once in the hallway, Lennart and Elin walked side by side. “So what is it about?”

“All our drug tests were negative. I thought you would want to know as soon as possible.”

“Well,” Lennart uttered, visibly puzzled. “That was unexpected. And what about the autopsy?”

“Almost fully done, but I’m doing my best to check the body properly.”

Lennart fell silent, thinking:If Maya didn’t do it, it could be anyone. I honestly hoped this case would be simpler than this.

Chapter 31

Another day in confinement. Maya groaned and opened her eyes as a loud creak snapped her out of her nap.

She didn’t even know how long it had been since morning, only that she had eaten her breakfast earlier that day.

Is it already time for lunch?

“Good day, Miss Borg,” a male voice greeted her.

She snorted. “Maybe to you, definitely not for me.” She felt terrible plus the withdrawal was making her jumpy.

“I wouldn’t agree. We’re freeing you today,” the man said and unlocked her cell.

“Oh, is that so?” she added cynically.

“Come with me.”

“Fucking finally!” Maya got to her feet but her legs began trembling.

“You know, I should get a compensation for this.”

“Compensation?”

She sensed amusement in the guard’s voice.

“I was falsely accused!”

“You’re not completely off the list of suspects as nothing is proven yet. We’re just freeing you because the tests were all negative.”

“It will be proven. But that asshole is slow.”

“Excuse me?”

“Your boss.”

“He is just doing his job. We all do. It’s your own fault you found yourself on the list.”

Maya fell silent, and once they entered the office, she was ordered to sit on a chair.
