Unless...

Slowly turning to look at Amber, I asked, “Amber, I need the phone.”

“King said to only call if it was an emergency.”

“JUST GET ME THE FUCKING PHONE!” I shouted and instantly regretted my outburst as she jumped in fear, moving further away from me. Eyes wide, she slinked out of the room, only to return moments later with the cordless landline phone, throwing it on the bed. Reaching out, I grabbed it, then hit the call button and the phone automatically started ringing.

“It hasn’t even been two hours, asshole. What?” Cash groaned.

“I need to speak with Sypher. Now.”

“No can do.”

“Cash,” I growled. “I’m not fucking playing around. You either get Sypher on the fucking phone right fucking now, or I will walk my fucking happy ass out of this motherfucking cabin.”

Cash cursed, but said nothing as I heard him yell for Sypher.

Seconds later, the kid jumped on the line.

“Hey, Mass. What’s up?”

“What are August’s parents’ names?”

“Why?”

“JUST ANSWER ME!” I shouted, noticing how Amber never took her eyes off me.

“Fuck,” the kid groaned. “Hang on, I need to look.”

“What’s up?” I vaguely heard Torment chuckle. “Massacre already losing his shit?”

“Yeah,” the kid muttered. “He wants Bane’s parents’ names.”

“Albert Lansing and Julia Craven.”

“What did he say?” I shouted into the phone as the hair on the back of my neck stood up.

“I said August’s parents were Albert Lansing and Julia Craven. We already know that Bane is a Baudelaire. Val told us when the shit went down with Sypher,” Torment said into the phone. “Is there a fucking problem?”

“YES!” I yelled into the phone. “Morpheus is going to kill Bane.”

At that, Amber rushed over to me, fear across her face.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Torment sneered. “Montana’s already called Morpheus. He’s assured us that Bane is fine and will stay that way until the meeting.”

“Cancel the meeting. It’s a trap!”

“Massacre, I know you are bored and want to help, but you need to leave this one alone. Montana has everything under control.”

“You don’t understand, Torment. Morpheus believes that Albert Lansing killed his parents. He’s going to invoke alife for a life!”

Chapter Thirty-One

Amber

My heart thumped like a drum in my chest as I listened to Massacre speak. What the hell did he mean by a life for a life? I mean, the words were pretty self-explanatory, but I needed him to clarify. What was supposed to be a few weeks of convalescing turned dark real quick, and I wasn’t sure how much more I could take.
