“A little protective, aren’t we?”Elias replies coolly.

“Get out of my party.”Fox’s glare turns on me next, and his voice drops.“And you—you’re coming with me.”Before I can even respond, he grabs my wrist and pulls me inside, weaving through the crowd toward the front door.

“You can’t just treat me like one of your girlfriends!”I protest as we reach his car.

He opens the passenger door, ignoring me completely.“You’re lucky I’m treating you less like them. Now, get the fuck in.”

“No,” I snap.“You can’t fucking continue to treat me like a child.”

But Fox doesn’t back down.He leans in close, frustration flaring in his eyes, and then he practically forces me into the passenger seat and slams the door.

What’s his deal?Is he crazy? He kisses me like it means something, then acts like I’m nothing, and now he’s dragging me out of his own party just because someone else was interested in me.

Fox slips into the driver’s seat and pulls onto the road, the silence thick between us.

“You can’t just ruin my relationship,” I finally blurt out.

“Relationship?”he scoffs, his eyes on the road.“You were about to kiss a random stranger while you’re half-drunk.You should be thanking me for saving you from catching God-knows-what from some guy you don’t even know.”

“Bitter, much? You think you’re so fucking special, don’t you?Why did you even kiss me?”

Fox’s jaw clenches, but he doesn’t answer. We’re already close to the apartment, and the silence hangs in the air, heavy and unbroken.

“Answer me, goddamnit,” I demand.“You can’t just kiss me and then pretend it didn’t happen.”

He glances over, his blue eyes cold.“What, did you expect a relationship out of one kiss?”

“No.I didn’t expect you to treat me like shit either. And by the way, I’d never want to date you,” I snap back, feeling the heat of anger in my chest.“It’s not like you’re my type anyway.”

Do I even know what my type is?I haven’t thought that far ahead before.

“Good, because I’m straight and you’re not.And trust me, you’re definitely not my type,” he says with a bitter smirk.

“Then why the fuck did you kiss me?”He stays silent, and my frustration flares as he pulls into the parking lot of our building.

Suddenly, he starts to chuckle as he stares at me.“Boy, look at you spilling out every F-word in the dictionary,” he scoffs as he gets out of his car and I get down too.

Without waiting for him, I shove open the door to the lobby and walk straight to the elevator.I’m so drunk and angry I can barely see the buttons on the panel.I feel Fox behind me as he pushes our floor button and I stagger into the elevator.

We ride the elevator in silence, with different questions bombarding in my head.Slowly, the elevator doors slide open and we step out.I walk ahead of him, my footsteps hasty as I stop in front of our door, fumbling with the keys in the lock until he steps up close behind me, reaching around to unlock the door himself.

“Let me get it,” his deep voice whispers in my ear.His body heat presses close, and I freeze, too aware of how near he is.The door swings open, and I storm inside, but I don’t make it far.We need to clear this up.He can’t just kiss me and act like it means nothing.

“Why did you kiss me, Fox?”I say once we’re in the living room.

“Why were you trying to kiss some total stranger?”He throws back the question, his tone accusing.

“Are you serious? You kissed me first, then acted like it was nothing. So, why did you kiss me?”

He’s silent, just staring at me, as if daring me to ask again.

“It doesn’t matter,” he finally says.

“It doesn’t matter? You think I’m some… some random hookup you can kiss on a whim and then ignore?”My voice shakes with frustration.“You have no idea what that meant to me.”

He smirks, his tone mocking.“So what, you thought that one kiss meant we’d start dating?”

The dismissive look in his eyes is too much.I feel my heart twist.“You’re the last person I’d want to date, Fox.”
