“Athe—”

Athena shook her head, rejecting his intention to reach out to her. Her eyes shimmered.

“No.” She shook her head and took three steps backward to move away from him.

“He did not need a father who would throw him away like you threw me away,” she concluded.

Marcus’s body went rigid as her words seemed to have struck him hard.

Good.

A thick silence stretched between them.

She blinked away the tears that threatened to form in her eyes as she tried to hold onto control, but her body was betraying her. She couldn’t move.

She was tired. From getting abducted, maintaining her glamor for days, trying to keep her son safe from demons, expelling a lot of magic, and fighting off the stronger demons. She was glazed with fatigue, and her body was giving up on her.

Her breath became heavier. She felt a wave of dizziness hit her as her eyes struggled to stay open.

Her body could take no more. Her vision blurred. The exhaustion she had held at bay came crashing in.

“Athena?” Marcus’s voice grew distant.

Her knees buckled, and her legs gave out.

She felt her body falling, the cold stone rushing up to meet her. But she didn’t hit the floor.

A pair of strong arms caught her and enveloped her in their warmth.

The last thing she saw was Marcus’s face, twisted in worry. The last thing she heard was his voice, desperate and panicked as he screamed her name to call her back to consciousness.

“Athena!”

But it was too late, and the darkness had successfully engulfed her; her eyes went pitch black.
