“What is that?” she asked, confused.

And in one swift movement, he withdrew the syringe and stabbed her neck. Her eyes widened with shock. The green liquid gleamed before disappearing beneath her skin until the very last drop.

Her body went limp almost immediately, collapsing backward into the house. Marcus let out a slow, steadying breath.

It was now or never.

He closed the door behind him and moved into the house. He found Riley’s bedroom and opened the door. The small figure lay tucked under the covers, fast asleep.

An open book rested face down on the bedside table. The title read ‘The Superheroes Series’, its cover adorned with cartoon characters with exaggerated muscles.

His wolf stirred at the memory of their earlier conversation.

‘Are you a superhero?’

His wolf went silent again in disapproval.

This was a mission. He had to get the job done. No matter what his wolf felt.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, pulling a handkerchief from his coat pockets and gently over the boy’s nose. He counted to five, then withdrew his hands.

Marcus pulled out his phone and sent a message,

“Targets acquired.”
