Maybe they were together, he thought.

But the room was empty.

A cold sweat broke out across his back.

He crossed to the third room in long strides, then the fourth. Then to the kitchen and every other room.

Nothing.

Fuck. He cursed.

He couldn’t find them.

Panic set in.

He closed his eyes to focus on tracking their scents, and he speedily went where it led him.

Marcus burst through the back entrance.

He opened the back door just in time to see Athena creeping outside the back exit. She wrapped a cloak around herself. She held a dagger in her hand and a sleeping Riley.

Was she leaving?

“Seriously?” he said, his voice cut sharply into the night air.

She froze, and for a moment, Marcus couldn’t decide if he wanted to yell or fall apart.

“Going somewhere?” he questioned as he moved closer to her.

Athena whirled, nearly losing her balance.

His vision narrowed.

She continued walking.

“Athena!”

She stopped in her tracks again.

“Don’t you dare take another step.”

She turned to face him fully, her eyes wide with defiance. Her fingers tightened around Riley as he stirred in his sleep.

Marcus strode toward them, anger and betrayal burning through his veins.

She was going to run.

Again.
