That was why she had kept herself away from the other witches. Because she didn’t want to risk being discovered.

She had to raise an alarm.

“Athena.” A voice sang loud from behind her.

Athena turned and saw Aubrey walking toward her.

What did she want?

Athena didn’t know whether to run or wait.

But how could she outrun a demon? Alone on this path?

Besides, it was smarter not to attack first. She hoped Aubrey hadn’t sensed anything unusual from her.

Aubrey’s smile cracked, twisted at the edges. “I was hoping it wouldn’t be you.”

“I don’t understand,” Athena whispered.

“I had hoped it wouldn’t be you,” Athena repeated, “who found out first.”

Suddenly, Aubrey’s form shimmered into a twisted figure, her skin turned grey and leathery, and her eyes glowed red in a face distorted by inhuman features.

She shifted into her true demonic flesh, and Athena didn’t even have time to scream before Aubrey lunged at her.
