Straightening up, Sebastian retrieved his phone from the desk and walked out of the office with a smug smile on his face.

Adam stared after him, confusion and surprise written across his face. “Why would I regret badmouthing a woman I don’t even know?” he muttered under his breath.

Emily struggled lightly, trying to free herself from Sebastian’s hold, but he murmured in a husky voice, “Don’t move, baby.”

He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, pulling her close. His head rested in her lap, face pressed against her stomach, nuzzling into her soft skin as he breathed her in, eyes closed. Sebastian wore only low-slung trousers.

Emily, clad in one of the white short nightdresses he had bought for her, took a deep breath and smiled, settling back against the headboard. She ran her fingers through his hair, massaging his scalp. Sebastian let out a low, contented sound, his arms tightening around her as he buried his face into her, breathing her in.

Her hand drifted from his hair, tracing along his neck before gliding over his chest. That’s when she noticed it—a thin, pale scar, like the mark of a blade. Leaning closer, her fingers brushed the edge of it. “How did you get this?” she asked softly.

Sebastian met her eyes. “It’s nothing. Just [1]an old injury,” he said lightly.

She frowned, the small crease between her brows betraying her concern.

He held her gaze. Then his body arched slightly, his hand sliding to the back of her neck, guiding her head down toward him. His lips captured hers, his bottom lip sliding over hers, teeth grazing lightly, while his tongue traced hers, seeking and tasting.

When they finally parted, Emily caught her breath, her fingers tangling in his hair. She whispered in surprise, “What… happened?”

“I’m glad to see you care,” he murmured, his eyes full of affection. The look in his gaze made her chest tighten.

Emily lifted her pencil from her design, her heart still racing. Thoughts of Sebastian swirled relentlessly in her mind. She hesitated before picking up her phone, then, impatient, tapped the screen again.

No text. No call.

Disappointment flashed across her eyes, her lips pressing into a thin line. “He must be busy with work,” she whispered, hands clutching the phone before setting it down. “Can I really expect to always be on his mind?”

At that moment, her office door opened, and a man stepped in. Emily’s head lifted—only to see Sebastian walking in. She jumped to her feet, her face lighting up with pure excitement. He smiled immediately, his eyes finding hers and twinkling at the sight of her.

Emily didn’t even notice that Adam was right behind him. Without thinking, she instinctively started stepping forward, ready to wrap her arms around Sebastian, when Adam’s voice cut through.

“Why do you seem happier to see Sebastian than you are to see me?”

Emily’s steps halted instantly, shock coursing through her as her gaze finally landed on Adam, standing right behind Sebastian. Her heart jumped into her throat—she had been seconds away from kissing Sebastian in front of her brother!

Forcing a laugh to mask her fluster, she blurted out, “It’s not like that! You know you’ve been the one I’ve loved most since childhood. Everyone else is temporary. How could I ever be happier to see anyone else than you?” She walked over to Adam, slipping her arm through his and flashing him a grin.

The moment those words left her lips, Sebastian’s eyes darkened, a flash of anger passing over his face. He didn’t look pleased at all. Emily didn’t notice, instead turning to him and asking, “What are you both doing here?”

Sebastian’s face was set in a displeased expression, but he replied evenly, “I wanted to check on our project. Your brother insisted on coming along to see what you’ve been working on.”

She teased Adam. “You really think so highly of me, being this excited to see my designs?”

Adam patted her hand that rested on his arm. “Anything you create will be out of this world. I already know that.”

Emily smiled at his words, nearly laughing—until a voice from outside the door interrupted them. She looked toward the entrance and saw her assistant standing there, eyes flicking from Emily to the two men in the room. Her jaw dropped slightly, as if she’d just stumbled upon the eighth wonder of the world.

“What is it?” Emily asked, snapping the woman’s attention back to her.

The assistant stammered before finally saying, “Ms. Crawford, you’re needed in the meeting room. We need your help with something.”

“I’ll be there in a minute,” Emily replied.

The assistant nodded and left, but kept turning her head again and again, sneaking glances at Sebastian and Adam.
