A frustrated soft growl filled the room. “Whatever.” I chuckled. “The reason I’m calling is this list you left me.”

“Yes?”

“Why am I going shopping? For a gown, nonetheless.”

I grinned. “Because you married a wealthy man, and I want to spoil you.”

Silence stretched for a few seconds, then a heavy sigh. “If that’s your idea of spoiling someone, you need to learn a thing or two from French men.”

This time I growled. “Mention other men and there’ll be hell to pay when I get back.”

“Get back?” Fuck, I slipped. “Where did you go?”

“Nowhere important. I’ll be back for dinner.” I could only imagine the face she was making. “Go shopping. Go to a spa. Spend some money. Buy clothes. Get some toys for Ares.”

She let out a frustrated breath. “You’re joking, right? It will take me days to drag him away from that train set.”

I smiled. “He liked it?”

Fuck, I wanted to see his face when he opened it.

“Yes, he liked it.” She cleared her throat. “I took a few photos. Umm… I can send them over.”

My heart hammered in my chest. I could hear the vulnerability in her voice. There were so many secrets she was keeping, some I knew and some I couldn’t even begin to guess at. The carefree young woman I’d known had become an enigma, but I’d solve this mystery. Then I’d show her that she was mine. That she had always been mine. Words wouldn’t assure her, but time would.

“I’d love that,” I said. I’d taken her numerous times last night, yet I still hadn’t had my fill. I feared it’d never be enough. If the last six years without her hadn’t cured me of her, nothing would. I’d want her until my dying day.

My phone buzzed. Once. Twice. Three times. “Okay, pictures sent,” she announced, her tone soft.

“Thank you.”

I kept her on speaker as I checked out the photos she sent. Instantly, my lips tugged up. Ares’s face beamed, an ear-to-ear grin stretching wide as he stared at the newThomas the Trainset.

“Is Ares’s room okay? You can change anything you want. In any of the rooms.”

“Yes, it’s fine. Perfect.”

“Something must not be good enough in our room though,” I stated.

“I couldn’t sleep.” Another deep sigh. “I’m not used to sharing a bed with an unfamiliar person.”

I switched off the speaker so the others couldn’t hear. “Bullshit.” She didn’t have that problem the first night we spent together. I still remembered how she’d tucked herself into me, dozing off, only for her to wake up with my face buried between her legs. “Now tell me what the deal is. Mattress not to your liking?”

“It’s fine, Byron.”

“Then what?” I challenged. “You know every inch of me, so don’t give me the ‘unfamiliar person in your bed’ excuse.”

“Or else” hung in the air.

She let out a frustrated breath. “Ares usually doesn’t sleep well the first night in an unfamiliar place. I wanted to make sure he was okay.”

Okay, that made a little more sense. Aurora, my little sister, was like that too when she was a kid. “I’ll get a baby monitor. We’ll need it eventually anyhow.”

Especially because I planned on fucking her every chance I had. Six years of jacking off. She had a lot to atone for, whether she knew the role she’d played or not.

“Yeah, you’re crazy,” she muttered.

I chuckled.
