No fucking idea whatthatmeant.

My chest flared with anger. “What do you mean your ‘kind’ doesn’t mix? You don’t even know me.”

His nostrils flared, annoyance clear. “You have nothing. No connections. No achievements. We are the Kennedys of our time.”

Jesus, he really had a pompous attitude and way too high an opinion of himself.

“Listen, I don’t give a shit what you think,” I snapped. “Your son and I are adults, and we can do whatever we want.”

Red washed his complexion while our gazes burned into each other’s.

“Let me make this short and sweet. Byron doesn’t exist for you and neither does his money.” I frowned. Money? Then realization settled in. The bastard thought me a gold digger.

“I don’t want nor need his money.”

His jaw tightened. “But you want him.”

Man, what was with this guy. “I’ll be damned if I let you mess up my… our… plans.”

I hesitated. “Plans?”

He took a single step and brushed off his sleeves. “My family is none of your business. You don’t really think I’d give you ammunition to use against us.” His eyes narrowed into slits. “Now, be a good little whore and give me a show. Let’s see your tits and ass.”

This man was out of his goddamn mind.

“Get the fuck out or I’m calling the police.” My voice trembled slightly, but I held his eyes. “Try getting a glimpse of my ass or tits and it will be the last thing you see because I’ll claw out your eyes.”

He snickered, his eyes slithering over me. “You really are a spiteful little thing. I bet you are something else in bed. All fire.”

My eyebrows shot to my hairline. “Excuse me?”

“You’ll excuse yourself in a minute,” he snarled. “But first, we’re going to clear some things up.”

My shoulders hardened and I sat up straight. “You need to learn some manners. I have nothing to say to you, and I don’t want to hear what you have to say. So, pardon my French. But… Get. The. Fuck. Out.”

His jaw was tight, but he only arched a brow.

“Are you sure you don’t want to hear what I can do to your father?” Hyperawareness inched over my skin, coupled with a terrible feeling of dread. When I remained silent, he continued, “Yeah, I’ve looked you up, Odette Madeline Swan. I know all about your sister and your father’s hospital. I can have the hospital shut down in two days.” Tiny spiders crawled all over me as I registered his words. This man wasn’t right. “I can have your father’s legacy destroyed within the next twenty-four hours.”

An incredulous laugh burst from my mouth, but I willed myself to stay calm. “Don’t you dare threaten me.”

Senator Ashford’s eyes turned to frozen blue Arctic lakes. I shivered.

“You won’t be getting in my way.” There had to be a meaning behind his words, except I couldn’t grasp it. “I have squashed greater obstacles than you. And you, my dear, I can make you disappear and your body never found.”

I wanted to show backbone and fight him, I really did. But something about the menacing grimace on his face shot an alert through me. Suddenly, I wanted to fold up inside myself until I turned invisible. Or simply run.

Trying to appear brave, I let out a weak laugh and responded, “You’re delusional.”

“Then I’ll have to prove it to you and make your father’s hospital history,” he decreed. “If you so much as try anything with my son and his fiancée—” I couldn’t hear the rest of his words because my ears rang with fury.Fiancée!That motherfucker. Shame and rage filled me instantly, and had that fucker been here, I’d have strangled him and not lost any sleep over it. I hated cheaters, and I definitely never wanted to be the other woman. “She’s from an accomplished family. And you, little whore, are just a side piece.”

My jaw fell open, and the only reason it didn’t audibly thump against the floor was because I was still on the bed.

“You’re mad,” I rasped. “Crazy.” Why would he do all this just because I hooked up with his son? His thirty-four-year-old son, at that. Something was just plain wrong here, or maybe this family was just fucked up.

He pulled out a phone, and I watched as his fingers darted across the screen. “One wrong move and I’ll have your father in the unemployment line. Piss me off more and I’ll make your father and sister pay.”

A void opened in my chest. Last night, I had magic. A dream. This morning, I was in a nightmare.
