“We can’t let them–” Kyran started but Aiden’s glare cut him off.
The three of them might be close, but they all knew that Aiden would one day take over the Callahan mafia as the head. He couldn’t afford to react first and think afterwards. The twins, on the other hand, always reacted. I lost count of times Aiden bailed them out of trouble.
“Get your asses on the couch and shut your mouth,” Aiden barked when Tyran opened his mouth with a clear protest on his face. “We are watching a movie with our sister.”
“She needs a puppy to cuddle with,” Kyran grumbled. “Not us.” I gave him an incredulous look but he just continued, “She might become depressed. At least that’s what Mother said.”
Of all the things, that was the dumbest thing to suggest. Unsurprisingly, it came from my mother.
“She doesn’t want a pet,” Aiden barked. “She’s allergic, you fucking moron.”
“There are pills for that,” Tyran said, throwing gum into his mouth.
“And she’s pregnant,” Aiden said, looking at our brothers like they were the biggest idiots on this planet. They weren’t, but they always took our mother’s advice. Unfortunately.
I sighed, grabbing the remote. If those three started to bicker back and forth, it’d be a long night. I tuned them out, their back and forth becoming background noise, and I started flipping through the channels as the storm lashed outside. The wind and rain whipped against the glass windows. It’d be hard to sleep without Luca here. Even though we only started sharing our bed, I was already used to having him here every night.
My phone laid in my lap, alongside an uneaten bowl of popcorn. I sent Luca a message half an hour ago, worried about his flight. Hence, my inability to enjoy my favorite snack while watching movies.
The twins flopped on the couch, their large frames making my body shift even in my state.
“Please don’t put on your old movies,” Tyran grumbled. “I can’t handle that shit in my state.”
I scoffed. “What state is that? The killer state?”
He turned his head my way, his eyes shining with amusement. “Put on an action movie. Sci-fi. Horror. Western. Anything but those damn old movies where they sing and cry until they are smooching all over. They can’t even give us a decent sex scene.”
Kyran jumped up and strode to the window, staring out. What he thought he’d see from all the way up here was beyond me?
“What do you want to watch?” I asked him. “Give me a title and I’ll put that on.”
“PutAvataron,” Tyran said. “It has a little romance in it.”
“The one with the blue people?” I asked incredulously.
“Don’t discriminate against blue people,” Kyran uttered as he made his way back from the window. I could see restlessness all over his expression. He didn’t even try to hide it.
When my husband got back, I’d kill him for sending all three of my brothers my way. This was the furthest thing from relaxing you could get.
“Fine.Avatarit is,” I conceded.
I scrolled to the search bar and started spelling out the letters.
“Mother asked to see you,” Aiden broke the silence. My finger paused over the last letter. “She said she has something to say to you.”
I scoffed. My mother barely ever paid any attention to me, never mind talked to me.
“Just meet her for an hour,” Kyran attempted to compromise. He always looked for compromises. Except when it was time to go kill someone. Then he was fuck compromise, consequences be damned.
I studied his face. He was only five years older than me but both he and Tyran sometimes seemed much older.
Tyran snatched my bowl of popcorn and started shoving it into his mouth like it was going out of style.
Sometimes, like right now, they seemed much younger, I thought to myself.
The three of us gave him a look and he smiled sheepishly.
“Want some?” he offered.
