“Yes.” One word and fear etched through its every syllable.

“I got her.”

Her sigh of relief breathed through the headset that mirrored my own.

“Can I talk to her?” she asked.

I handed my wife the phone and her icy fingers brushed against mine. Jesus, while I was busy fuming, Davina was cold with fear. She held the phone to her ear, nodding though Wynter couldn’t see her.

“I’m fine,” Davina assured her.

Fine, my fucking ass. I sat down next to her, picked her up and lifted her onto my lap. I pressed my lips to her neck, her pulse strong under my lips. It was the best comfort, because she was alive.

“No, no need to worry,” Davina continued. “Nothing happened. I’m fine. Stay where you are.”

“Are you sure?” I heard Wynter’s voice, soft and concerned. “I don’t mind. I can stay with you.”

“I’m fine, I promise,” Davina repeated. “I just want to be at home alone with my husband.”

Wynter chuckled. “Okay, if you are thinking aboutthatmaybe you really are fine.”

Davina smiled and the first flicker of amusement flashed in her eyes. Lifting a hand, I caressed her cheek. She is my oxygen, my heart.Without her, I’d be a shell of a man. Somehow, she made this life worth living.

The elevator door to my penthouse opened and Quinn walked in, with his arm strapped up in a sling, and finding my wife wrapped in my arms.

“Okay, I have to go,” Davina told Wynter. “Love you. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Love you too.”

The call ended. I was about to stand up and go to the office, yet I didn’t want to leave Davina.

“How are you feeling, Quinn?” Davina eyed him worriedly. Honestly, I wanted him to rest but he was a stubborn arsehole sometimes.

“Brand new,” he replied. “And ready to work.”

“You need to rest,” I told him. “You lost a lot of blood.”

He sat himself down. “I’m good,” he insisted. Like I said, a stubborn arse.

Quinn glanced between Davina and I, as if he waited for her to leave. She must have picked up the signal.

“I should know what’s going on,” she protested, her eyes locked on me. She knew who to appeal to. “I’m married to you and-”

“Davina, I don’t want you wrapped up in all of this,” I soothed her.

“Iamwrapped up in all this,” she retorted stubbornly. “From the moment I married you.” I leaned closer to press a kiss to her temple. I didn’t know if I should be proud of her or scold her for trying to be too brave. “Actually, scratch that,” she corrected herself. “I have been wrapped up in this shit from the moment we stole from you. I appreciate you protecting me. For protecting all of us, but we have to be aware of the threats. Don’t leave me blind, Liam.”

“I’m trying to protect you. The Italians have even sucked Garrett into their scheme for revenge,” I barked out. When she gave me a confused look, I explained, “He received a payment from the Italians.”

“But why?” she questioned. “Let me help.”

“Remember the old man from the club?” I asked her. She nodded, her delicate brows furrowed. “He has tried to hurt my family ever since Aisling refused him. My sister paid a big price for it. I can’t let him get to you too,” I clipped. Just thinking about it had my blood boiling. “Because he knows how much you mean to me.”

She gasped, her eyes like stormy clouds, zoning in on my face. They were like two diamonds.

Maybe it was time to go after the Pakhan and DiLustros.

Because I had no intention of losing my young wife.
