“You have to get laid,” Daphne chimed in. “I think it is imperative to lift your mood.”

“Okay, maybe we start with our reverse harem tonight,” I cackled and all three of us laughed.

For the next five minutes, all three of us sipped our wine and watched Elsa. By this point, I knew the entire movie by heart so I just pretended to watch while thinking about getting laid. Mateo Agosti flashed in my mind and my cheeks heated up. Too bad he was the boss of my boss and his brother, and getting laid by him was completely out of the question.

I had never felt such a strong attraction to a man before. I wanted to ask Marissa about Mateo but something held me back

“You are not joking,” Marissa commented, startling me. “They sing tons in this movie.”

“Yes, they do.”

“You know what,” Daphne exclaimed. “I think Kyle did go to Columbia. He flunked several times so he might have graduated after us. He didn’t have Brie like we did.”

I didn’t think to check the graduation class after us since I knew we were younger.

“Let me check.” I quickly grabbed my iPhone and googled graduation class a year after I graduated.

“Holy shit,” I mumbled. “There he is.”

It was strange seeing his picture. I swallowed hard, remembering how our last encounter went. To say it wasn’t pleasant was the understatement of the century. Firmly pushing those memories out of my mind, I took a screenshot of it. I would try contacting the university and obtaining next of kin information.

I raised my eyes to find both Daphne’s and Marissa’s eyes on me.

“Are you sure that’s smart?” Marissa whispered.

“It’ll just be a safety card,” I assured her. I couldn’t risk losing Emma. “I’ll do all my homework before doing anything about it.”

Twenty minutes later, they were both gone and Emma tucked into her bed. I headed into the shower. Turning the water on, I stripped out of my clothes while Marissa’s question kept lingering on my mind. It was a valid question, considering what happened the last time I reached out. We had two dead bodies on our hands.

In mechanical motions, I washed my hair, then proceeded to wash my body. Our life has barely started,Daphne’s words echoed in my head. I was so ready to get this thing called life going. I wanted to grab life by its balls and demand to be given everything I want, starting with my daughter’s health. And then maybe end it with getting laid, I thought wryly. Just no repeat of last time, that was the most dreadful experience. Totally not pleasurable.

I turned off the shower and dried off.

“Speaking of pleasure,” I muttered. “Let’s get ready for a book boyfriend, times three or more.”

Yeah, I definitely needed more company. I spoke to myself too much.

Two Years Ago

Today was a clusterfuck. I lost two of my men in New York City. Had to shoot a mole among my team, which was the worst kind of betrayal in my book.

It was close to midnight when I was exiting Agosti Enterprise with Antonio and another guard. Regardless of the bodyguards, I always surveyed the surroundings. It was what kept me alive. I was the first one to notice Declan and his two brothers come out of the dark alley between the two buildings. Their faces told me they were up to no good.

“Ten o’clock,” I warned Antonio, pulling out my knife from its sheath.

“You are fucking dead,” Declan’s younger brother hissed. I had no fucking idea what he was talking about but fuck if I even cared.

“Shut it,” Declan ordered his little brother, his eyes on me.

My heartbeat never even sped up. Sometimes I wondered if maybe I lacked all emotions… fear, love, yearning. I didn’t feel any of it. For me, all that mattered was respect and loyalty.

I stood still, waiting. It wouldn’t be me to start this war between the Irish and the Italians, and bathe Boston’s streets in blood. I’d respond if we were attacked with brutal force, but I’d be damned if I started it.

“One of your men attacked,” Declan finally said.
