Fen cleared his throat in the hallway.

“Go away, Fen,” we said in unison.

“Not until you hug it out,” he answered.

I raised an eyebrow to Greeve. “I’m not hugging you.”

“Will you talk to her for me?” he asked, his eyes pleading.

I shook my head, throwing my hands up in mock surrender. “She’s more pissed at me than anyone.”

“Please. I’ll get on my knees right here. She won’t talk to me.”

“Oh my gods, fine. But you have to do something for me.”

“Anything.”

I smiled wickedly. “You’re going to regret that.”

“Probably,” he answered, pulling me into the hug I didn’t want.

Fen opened the door grinning.

I rolled my eyes and stormed past him, headed to the lists.

“Fine, I’m an asshole.” I leaned against the fence as Greywolf began to warm up.

Gaea kicked the sand below her feet but didn’t answer. Of all people, Loti was the one who convinced her to come down and talk to me.

“I was so pissed when Wren did that to me, so I get it. I should have said something in private. I just . . .” My voice faded away as I struggled to explain the rage.

“Was that a complete thought?” she asked finally.

“I suck at this.” I pulled myself up and sat on the top of the fence lining the arena. “Sometimes I feel like I’m okay and I have confidence that we can do this, and then shit hits the fan and I can’t collect my thoughts long enough to consider we might actually all fucking die.”

“But you knew before we went to Coro’s court. You could have told me.”

“I only guessed. I didn’t know for sure until you grabbed him and I saw his face right before you left me behind. He knew what was happening and it wasn’t me he was worried about.”

She considered that for a moment, picking lint from her shirt. “Fine. I’m going to forgive you because I somewhat like your snarky attitude and all around badassery, but I’m not sure you’re going to convince Greeve as easily as me.”

“He’s the one who asked me to talk to you. Besides, he can suck my dick.”

“There’s that attitude,” she laughed and I winked at her.

“Seriously though, are you going to accept the bond?”

“I mean, have you seen him? Tall, dark, handsome.”

“Moody as fuck,” I added.

“Also that. I guess I thought when the mating bond snapped into place, it would happen to both of us at the same time.”

“I think they are all always different. I’m not even sure the exact moment mine and Fen’s bond really snapped. There was a moment in The Mists, but there was something more between us before that. Still, you might have some competition with the hydra. Just maybe keep him away from the sea for a while.”

Is it safe yet?
