‘I have been so messed up since I was brought here, D. My whole life has been a lie. No one understands that I need to know why she took me from my family to raise me as her own. Are you saying that you know why?’I hit send and waited as I almost held my breath.
He texted back:‘I know why or rather I found out why after they let me loose. I never knew the truth all along though, sis. I only knew when I met Julianna in that deposition. I swear I didn’t.’
I raised my gaze to the ceiling. Dare I believe him? He had always been good to me and treated me just like he said, as his little sister.
Another text came in from him… ‘Can you meet me somewhere?’
I paused and wondered…Could I? I replied,‘I’m not sure and you do know that they are still after you, right?’
He sent me a responding text,‘Yeah, like always. I have to leave the country because of that but before I do, I want to see you and give you what I found.’
‘What did you find?’I texted back as my heart pounded furiously in my chest. I waited a minute then another and nervously bit at my fingernail.
Finally, he answered,‘The truth. I found out why Mom did it.’
I rolled my eyes. Mom. I wanted to scream that she was not my mother. Didn’t he get that part yet? Instead, I typed back,‘Ok. I will try to find a way out.’
‘You need to hurry, I only have 2 days until my flight.’
Chapter Three:Taking Advantage
Tito
I had barely knocked when Valencia yanked the door open, grabbed my shirt sleeve and tugged me into her room.
She seemed to be incoherent really. Sputtering about leaving the estate while looking panicked.
Finally, I sat her down on the bed and took her hands into mine. “Ok, calm down and tell me what is going on,” I urged as I looked into her eyes. Her beautiful, mesmerizing, emerald eyes. Right now, they glittered with unshed tears. It deepened their color and I wondered what they looked like when she came. Did they get deeper in color, or did they lighten up a little?
I blinked hard and pressed the reset button in my brain. The girl was upset and in a panic while I was envisioning her in the throes of passion?
What kind of lowdown, apeshit male crap was that?
I took a deep breath and asked her, “Tell me why you’re so upset.”
“Do you promise to keep it between me and you?” she asked.
I paused at this and then replied, “It depends.”
“On what?” she asked.
The answer was too easy for me. “On whether it would hurt anyone in the Descalia family.”
She had calmed her breathing and tilted her head at me. “I will only hurt you maybe? I mean if you help me.”
I stared at her in confusion but I again knew my answer, “I’m willing to risk myself for you.”
Gazing at me, she studied my face. Suddenly, the sparkle of moisture in her eyes filled so tear drops spilled from her eyes. “Ohhh!” she cried out as she yanked her hands from my grasp and collapsed onto the bed.
I sat there a bit stunned. What the hell? Turning, I gently patted her on the back in a futile attempt to comfort her. I don’t think I’d ever dealt with a weeping woman before. In fact, the last time had been when I was really young and my Papa died. My mother just wouldn't or couldn’t stop crying. Still, that couldn’t be counted as experience because I had been dragged from the room by my Uncle Stephano. I never got my mother to stop weeping. So no, I didn’t know what to do here either.
“I’m sooo sorry,” she wept out as her hands covered her face. “Just leave now, please?”
I couldn’t do that. I’d come here to confess my feelings to her. To tell her I was falling in love with her. Whatever had happened before I got here had derailed that for me. But if I planned on taking her and keeping her with me, I’d better step forward with some help now. “Tell me what happened. I can’t help you if you don’t.”
Her crying continued as she stammered a response, “I-I can’t risk you. I h-have to solve it by m-myself.”
I caressed her back now instead of patting it. “I swear I will not divulge your secret,” I vowed in a bit of panic as I was losing her here. The next thing she would do is make me leave the room. Then I think my chances with her would be nil after that. Especially if it was as she said she needed to leave.
