I shook my head. “Semi, all the way? I never cared.” I got behind the wheel and started the car. “Ok Belle, so are we running any more errands?”
She didn’t reply.
“Belle?”
She kept staring ahead and not even blinking. “Like even people I don’t know are staring at us.”
I lowered my head a bit and looked through the car window to where she was staring.
The car in that parking spot suddenly pulled out in reverse and raced through the parking lot.
“Who was that?” I asked her.
She slowly shook her head. “I don’t know, but that’s not the point.”
“You cannot control what other people say or do, Belle.” I grasped her hand. “If you care too much, it gives them power over you.”
She looked over at me as she squeezed my hand. “Yeah, I know you're right. I just always liked blending in and not being noticed. I’ll get used to it.”
“You are with me now and I get noticed, Belle. I’m not sorry about that and I don’t try to get attention. I actually just do not care what anyone else thinks. With the exception of you.” I chuckled. “Well, the way we fought at the beginning, I suppose I didn't care about that either.”
Belle laughed. “Nah, believe me I could tell that you didn’t care.”
“Well, I do now. But as far as anyone else is concerned?” I shrugged. “You've seen me with Fate. I don’t even care what he thinks of me.”
Belle nodded her head as she grinned at me. “Yeah, I noticed that.”
“Ok, so from now on, ignore what people are saying, K?”
Nodding, she said, “I got it and I will try.”
“Good, so give me directions to your place,” I said. “And let’s be sure to make a grand entrance when we get there. Maybe we can all sing or something?”
Batting her eyes at me Belle stared at me.
I laughed at the stunned look on her face.
Chapter Twenty:The Tea
Belle
I tried not to care, just like Liberty had instructed. Easy for him to say, he’d been in the limelight for a long time. Me? I liked it quiet and lowkey. I worked for a law firm and they discouraged getting the wrong kind of notice. I now realized that having two men moving into my apartment would definitely be the wrong kind of notice.
I really had no choice though, did I? It had been the only way to be able to leave that semi-permanent confinement at the Connor House.
When we arrived at my apartment building, I did try to not look around. If I ignored the stares then maybe they would just look elsewhere. There were a few people in the parking area and yes, they were staring. Mrs. Argyle and a few of the other old ladies. I forgot that they all got home from Church Bingo at this time of day. Great, the biggest gossip group of this neighborhood had witnessed our grand arrival. Might as well do it up big, I guess.
The guys carried the groceries up while I had just my small bag of clothes. Nothing much as all my clothing was in my apartment. We got into the elevator and went up three floors. When the elevator doors opened that was when I remembered. “I don’t have a key,” I blurted out.
“What?” Liberty asked.
“Lost my purse, remember?”
Fate set the grocery bags down and looked around. “Is that your friend’s apartment?” He motioned his head across the way.
I nodded.
He turned and stepped over.
