“Ow, doc!” I groaned.
“There’s no exit wound, so that means we gotta dig it out.”
I winced and then scoffed. “Oh, goody.”
He chuckled. “Yeah, you're a Walker, alright.”
“How do you figure that?” I asked.
Moving around, he reached for a syringe and tapped it. “This will dull the pain at the wound area.”
“Yeah, I could use that right about now.”
“I bet,” he said as he pinched my skin right at the side of the bullet hole.
Gritting my teeth, I held still as the needle pierced my skin. “So, how did you figure I’m a Walker?”
“Well, besides the good looks, your attitude for one. I’ve been their doctor since well, each of them were born.” He looked down at me. “I wondered what Jarret had been up to for all these years.”
“You knew my dad?”
“Sure, him and his brother.”
I found it interesting as dad’s life before us was a blank slate to us mostly. “So what were they like?”
Dr. Robins cleaned my wound with antiseptic and shook his head. “They were close all the time they were growing up. I mean unlike most twins, they didn’t compete and they weren’t bothered by it. Until…” He paused as he sat on a stool then pulled a tray up close.
“Yeah? Until?”
“I shouldn't gossip even if it's very old gossip.”
“You mean when they fell in love with the same girl?” I asked.
He slowly nodded. “Not that anyone could blame them. Bea was a really beautiful girl. Funny, stubborn and headstrong. Special, ya know?”
“Sounds like you had a little crush going too,” I said as I smiled.
He paused and chuckled again. “Yeah, me and a bunch of others. Okay, hold still, this won’t hurt a lot but—”
“I will feel the pinch.”
He laughed. “Yep, smart as a whip, just like your dad.” He went quiet for a few minutes as he worked.
Finally, I heard the metal ping in the dish.
“Got it,” he said. “First, you need an antibiotic, so one more needle pinch.” He reached for another syringe and injected it into my arm vein. “It is usually a waste on you Walker boys but I will give you medical cautions anyways. No moving around for at least another day, and even then you need to take everything slow.”
I nodded. “Got it.”
“Yeah, I’ll bet. You either got a woman out there or another fight, so I won’t take your word for it.”
I chuckled. “Wow, you do know me.”
He smiled as he bandaged me up. “Tell your dad to come see me, would ya? I was a friend of his then he up and disappeared. Well, when you all get free of this…war that is.”
“I’ll tell him.”
“I hope you all stay safe. I’ve been praying for you.”
