“Your size says it all, man,” Liberty said.
“Well, let’s hope it says, stay away from us,” Belle said.
Scarlet looked over at her. “Belle, I know all of this is scary, but we are in it now. We need to trust these men. Then when this is over—”
“Over?” Belle yelled. “So far, we have been chased down, and have had to run for our lives. Then this battle with machine guns, rockets and a helicopter? You tell me this Deacon is a psycho and he won’t stop until we are all dead. So just when will it be over?’
“When Deacon is six feet under,” I said.
Belle and Scarlet looked over at me.
I shrugged. “I’m not one to…well, just go for violence, but this guy is a menace and worse, he’s hunting his own family down to kill them all. When he’s dead, this will be finished.”
“Maybe not,” Talon spoke up. “He has a sister in league with him.”
“So?” Liberty replied. “What can she do all by herself?”
“Be like her mother,” Talon replied. “O was far worse than Deacon is. He at least takes shots at us from afar. She killed her closest family right up close while eye to eye with them. If this is her daughter, we’d better not forget those facts.”
“Ok, ok.” Liberty raised his hands up. “One psycho at a time then.”
“You guys load up in the front,” Dagger waved to Belle and Ranger.
“I’ll follow on my bike,” Tank said.
Talon nodded. “Keys and Smoke will be behind you. They’ll watch your backs and the ER.” He looked over at me. “And we will be leading what I hope will be a wild goose chase. I’ll let Tank know when it's safe for you all to come home.” He turned away.
Lying on the truck bed I couldn’t see them all, but I heard the many bikes start up.
Scarlet laid over me again and Liberty held onto my lower legs. Damn, this would be another long ride. At least I hadmy woman with me. I smiled as I felt her warmth against me. For now, all I wanted to do was imagine Scarlet in white while coming up the aisle to marry me. Yeah, we were in a mess and I was on the way to the hospital, but so far we lived through it. I intended for us to live after this and I would marry Scarlet just like I imagined. Who knew I could be such a romantic? I never was before I met her.
I felt drowsy again, so I snoozed for I don’t know how long then Scarlet rose up and I noticed the truck had stopped.
“Time to move you, Justice,” Liberty said.
I groaned as I felt stiff all over from being on the sling cot so long and I didn’t even care to think about the throbbing pain in my shoulder.
The tailgate went down and Ranger appeared. “Ok, let’s take it easy.” He nodded at Liberty. “Ease him out.”
Liberty slid the cot along the bed, Tank grabbed the end of it and Liberty hopped down to take the back end.
I hated all this shit. Being carried around like a damn baby.
Scarlet was right alongside me as they carried me in. Looking down at me she said, “Oh, stop pouting. You got shot while saving your brother. We’ll get you fixed up and—”
“I’ll marry you as soon as possible.”
She looked stunned but she never got to say anything as interns and a nurse came up. They took over as they switched me to a rolling gurney and moved me along. I heard Scarlet fussing about staying with me, but their voices got further away as I was wheeled down a hallway.
A curtain opened and an older man smiled at me. “Hello, Mr. Walker.”
I assumed this was the good Dr. Robins.
They wheeled me in and he immediately started to check my wound. “How long ago were you shot?’
I paused. “Um, a few hours ago, maybe?”
“Hmm,” he mumbled as he reached under me.
