I was losing my cool here. Why wouldn’t he just drop this?
Raising his hands at the scowl on my face he defended, “I can’t let you get yourself hurt.”
“You are not my guardian angel.” I clenched my jaw.
“Oh, really? I have been your guardian angel for most of my life.”
“Liberty, leave this alone.”
“Are you gonna leave it alone?” someone else asked from behind us.
We both turned to see Scarlet.
I was caught. Yeah, I was. Between literally a rock and a hard place.
She stared at me with a hurt look in her eyes. “You told him?”
I shook my head. “He figured it out.”
“How?” she demanded.
“I’m nosy, stubborn and I watch his back,” Liberty answered for me.
Scarlet looked upset. “No one can know about this,” she whispered.
“And no one else will,” Liberty cut in again. “But you need to let us help you.”
She glared at him. “You both need to stay out of this.”
Liberty crossed his arms over his chest and said, “Nope. He’s determined to be involved and as his brother, that makes me involved.”
Scarlet kept shaking her head. “You both have lots of brothers. Redemption being one and he will be pissed if you help me.”
“Yeah?” Liberty replied. “Well, that’s his problem, isn’t it? The most important thing here to me is Justice. And since he is head over heels for you, that makes it my problem.”
“Oooh!” She tossed her hands up in frustration.
“See?” He smiled at her. “Stubborn.”
Scarlet paused. “Wait...did you just say he was head over heels for me?”
Liberty nodded.
“Yeah and there’s the nosy part.” I scoffed.
Looking stunned for a minute, Scarlet then gazed around. “So, why are you two over here at the vehicle lot?”
Liberty snickered. “That part was easy to figure out. See, if you are in trouble...and by the way, that is all Justice told me...period. He did not tell me anything else about this. But I digress...This trouble of yours has to be in town or somewhere else. So, it’s just connect the dots from there. I followed this man right here to the answer.”
Scarlet looked back and forth at us. Then she stepped closer and quietly asked, “So how are you going to help me?”
With her question, I felt relief for the first time all afternoon. She might let us help her.
“Well, I have an idea,” Liberty said. “Men can go out but it has to be in pairs. So, I will tell Talon we need to take you to your apartment because you left...well, something very important there when you were plucked up by Deacon fugface.”
Staring at him, she asked doubtfully, “And it will be that easy?”
He shrugged. “Why not? Obviously, there is something important in town or you wouldn’t be wanting to sneak a ride as a stowaway in the next vehicle heading out.”
