“Get moving everyone and fast,” Talon shouted. “RUN!”
The men on the bikes started their engines.
Justice pushed me to the car, “Get in!”
Liberty jumped through the driver’s side into the back.
“Hey!” Belle yelled as he landed onto her lap.
Barely shutting the door, I lunged into the passenger seat as the Camaro took off.
Justice sped up. “Let’s see what Wade’s piece of shit car can do!” He pressed the accelerator to the floor. Coming up on the speeding bikes, he honked as they swerved and he went around them.
The quarry was deep and if the cliffs fell, it would affect the land for miles. I could feel the road beneath us rolling and it was strange as the car kept coming up from the surface as if the tires had helium in them. We could hear a rumbling sound like some nightmare monster was howling its rage from behind us. Dust flew over the road and I wondered how Justice could even see to drive. The Camaro kept trying to jackknife but he managed to keep it on the road.
But drive he did, as we finally came out to the county road and the dust cleared. I turned my head to smile at Belle. “Now that is what it’s like to drive like a bat out of hell, sister.”
Not appreciating my joke, she looked pale and was holding onto the front seat with a white knuckled grip.
“I see the Rebels behind us,” Liberty told us from next to Belle in the backseat.
“I hope they all made it,” Justice said as it took him a while to slow down before he could pull over to the side of the road.
I turned in my seat and saw ten riders coming up to the county road now.
“That fucking sucked ass,” Dagger said into the comm as he coughed.
“Yeah, there are disadvantages to riding a Harley sometimes,” Justice joked.
“That is blasphemy, brother,” Liberty exclaimed. “I will pretend that you did not just say the Harley name in vain!”
“Wow,” Belle said. “Are all bikers as crazy as you are?”
Instead of taking this as an insult, Liberty laughed. “Sugar, you have no idea.”
She huffed at his use ofsugarand looked up at me. “Take me to Mom’s house.”
I paused to stare at her.
“Can’t do that yet,” Justice said.
Belle looked angry. “Look, I’m sorry about what happened, but none of this has anything to do with me.”
“What?” Liberty asked in shock. “You coherted with Deacon and tricked your own sister.”
“Liberty,” Justice spoke up. “You do know there’s no such word as coherted, right?”
Liberty scoffed. “Like I care, Mr. Grammar Police.” He turned to finish what he had been saying to Belle, “Do you know what Scarlet went through while thinking some dope dealer had you in his dirty clutches?”
Belle stilled and she looked stricken then she stared up at me. “I-I never…”
“No, you were never involved right?” Liberty reminded her.
“Liberty, lay off. She didn’t know, ok?” Justice cut in. “Deacon at one time fooled Logan and Liv, did you know that? So, don’t get onto her about this anymore.” He looked over at Belle and continued to explain to her, “We just feel like you will be safer with us.”
“Oh, really?” Belle said. “When you all are now afraid to go home because he will drop a bomb on you? You mean that kind of safe?”
Justice shook his head and looked over at me. “Stubborn, too bad she isn’t a lawyer, she’s good at arguing.”
