“Exactly,” Justice said. “We can’t go back to the…” Pausing in mid sentence, he turned and looked at Belle.
She stared back at him. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
I wondered too, but I had gotten to know Justice over the last month. The man was a born strategist and he always seemed to figure things out faster than anyone else, even Talon.
“What is it, Justice?” Talon asked as he seemed to know this fact too.
“How long were you with Deacon?” Justice asked her.
Looking confused, she asked, “Why? What does that have to do with anything?”
“You need to tell us exactly what happened, Belle.” Justice stepped closer to her. “How long were you with him?”
Stepping back, she looked from me over to him. “For the last two weeks or so.”
“At this lair, you just came from?” Justice questioned her.
“Well no, he got a suite for me at the Hotel Lamonde until just yesterday, then he brought me here. He said this was where I would finally get to see Scarlet.”
“What are you getting at, Justice?” I asked him.
He turned and gave me a wink. “We'll find out in a minute, babe. Just let me get to it.”
The man was…Wow, I just had no words. I gave him a nod and let him do his thing.
Belle looked back and forth at us. “Look, I don’t like getting interrogated here. If you’re saying I am in on this with Deacon, you would be wrong.” She took a deep breath and went on, “I admit now that I may have been fooled by him. So I went along with his plan to set Scarlet free, but I am not like some spy for him or something if that’s what you’re accusing me of!”
“Not a willing spy, but one nonetheless,” Justice stated.
She gasped. “Look, I would never—”
“Did he give you anything while you were with him?” Justice asked as he cut her off.
Pausing, she scrunched her brows. “Why?”
“Did he?” Justice asked as he ignored her question.
She nodded. “He did in fact.” She dug into her pocket and took out a cell phone. “It was so I could contact him, if I ever needed help. He said it was a secure phone.”
“Yeah,” Talon said in disgust as he stepped forward and took it from her. “I bet it’s secure all right.” He turned it over and popped the back off. Shaking his head, he pulled the small device from inside of it. Dropping on the ground, he growled as he raised his boot.
“STOP!” Justice yelled and pushed him back.
Talon righted himself and glared at him. “What the fuck? We have to destroy…” He paused and gazed down at the tracking device. Bending down, he picked it up and carefully placed it into the phone, replacing the back. Then he finally looked over at Justice. “Well goddamnit, councillor. You missed your calling. I needed you back when I was in Special Ops.”
Justice shook his head. “I will leave that plan up to you and your sister and you’d better figure it out quick, if we want it to work. After all, he expects us to fall for this and head home soon.”
Belle in the meantime, looked a bit pale. “H-he gave me that phone, so he could follow us?”
“Now, you're finally getting it,” Liberty piped up. “And he wasn’t going to follow us to dispense warrants. He would have killed you and your sister right along with the rest of us.”
Belle looked away as she refused to look at him or answer him.
I stepped over to her and reached for her. “Belle—”
She raised her hand up at me and then silently turned away to get into the backseat of the Camaro.
I shook my head and glanced over at Justice.
