I slowly nodded my head as I had to agree with him.

“But Deacon didn’t want me. I was taken by mistake or for him to get information on Jewel, I think? I mean I just was the ‘wrong girl in the wrong place’ mistake.”

I stared at her and said, “No, Scarlet... to me, you are the right girl.” I reached out and stroked her cheek softly.

She leaned into my hand. “Justice, I wish…” Her voice fell away as she stepped back. “I know this puts you in a bad position but besides Jewel and Cinnamon, I have no real friends here.”

I understood, she had mentioned this before, it wasn’t like anyone was mean to her...no, if they were, I would be on them for it. But she was only close to me. Damn, I’d been in situationswhere there was a conflict of interest or...I shook my head and said, “Do you want me to talk to him? Talon, I mean.”

She sighed. “I don’t think that will help. He said I would need an escort even if I had to go.”

“Ok, I will go with you as well. I will just go and talk to—”

She stepped closer to me and placed her hand onto my chest. “No.”

I was lost here. “Then what can I do?”

“You need to help me escape.”

I opened my mouth to ask why she thought that was our only choice...then I closed it. She’d made it sound like this was a prison. I paused. Maybe to her it was? “Look Scarlet, I will help you all I can. But how would I do that?”

“You sneak me out,” she said.

“I can’t even leave without an escort,” I replied. “None of us can. This Deacon, as you know, takes no prisoners.”

She braced her hands onto her curvy hips and glared at me.

I stared at her and admitted, “Ok, he does, but I sure as hell don’t want that to happen to you again.”

Looking even more upset if that was possible, she bit at her lip and tears filled her eyes. “This is a matter of life and death, Justice,” she whispered.

I stared at her. “Scarlet, you need to let us help you.”

“No, if I do…” She shook her head. “I can’t. If I tell anyone, she is gonna die.”

Chapter Two:Story Of My Life

Scarlet

I couldn’t tell Justice anything. I was too afraid. I didn’t know what these people would do. I wasn’t sure if he would help me at all. We were friends or I felt like we were. I should have known he would help me though.

Justice stared at me. “She?”

I nodded. “I can’t tell you anything. I just need to get to town, if you could help me do that?”

“Like I said before, I can with an escort just like everyone else here, but then what?”

“You just let me out of the car.”

“Where?” he asked.

“Anywhere in Ramton, I guess?” I replied.

“That sounds random.” He looked doubtful.

“It will be okay,” I defended.

“No.” Justice crossed his arms over his chest. “You say someone might die in this trouble you have. That sounds dangerous. More than dangerous in fact.
