Redemption stood next to him.
Liv had been sitting on a crate at the table, she stood to smile at us.
Justice took my hand and we walked over with Liberty following us.
“What’s going on, brother?” Redemption asked Justice. “Orbrothers, I should say.” He smiled at Liberty.
“We have something…” Justice cleared his throat. “To tell you about.”
“Oh?” Redemption looked puzzled. “Does this have anything to do with the trip to town that Liberty told us about?”
“Yeah, it does,” Justice nodded. “But he didn’t tell you all of it.”
Talon, Liv, and Redemption stared at us.
I refused to let Justice and Liberty take the blame for this, so I spoke up, “I didn’t want them to tell anyone as I believed it would end my sister’s life.”
They kept staring at me.
“What does that mean?” Talon asked.
“It means a week ago, my sister was taken and the people that took her told my mother that if we told anyone, they would kill Belle. So I begged the guys to stay quiet about it. I just wanted to get to town and the bank to get the money to exchange for my sister.”
“And you two...” Redemption glared at his little brothers. “Were just going to let her do this—”
“No! They were going with me,” I cut him off. “They figured out that I was going to sneak into one of the trucks or SUVs that were leaving and go by myself.”
“So why the story?” Talon glared at Liberty.
“Same reason, I begged them to just get me there,” I defended Liberty. “But we all realized... well, they did, that this whole thing might be Deacon.”
All three of them seemed to freeze at the mention of his name.
“You mean,” Liv spoke up. “That he has taken your sister?”
I nodded. “It made sense once Justice explained it to me. See...” I paused. “My dad is a drug addict.” I shook my head. “I’ve been ashamed of that fact for most of my life, so I bought this story about the drug money being owed because… well, he would do something like that. This man who called my mom told her that my dad owes them fifteen thousand dollars and if we don’t pay his bill…” Tears filled my eyes. “...they will kill Belle.”
“Ok,” Liv interjected. “You three figure that this is a set up, so Deacon can capture Scarlet?”
“Yes,” Justice replied. “Then he’ll have another hostage. I’m unsure of what he would want but he could have set this up so he would have some new leverage.”
“It sounds like him,” Liv said.
“So, I’m sorry that… they sort of left out some facts,” I went on. “But most of it is true. I do need something very important from town.”
“Money to give as ransom to a drug lord in exchange for your sister,” Talon supplied.
Nodding, I said, “But we have no choice to keep it quiet like I wanted. I am so afraid of what they might do if they find out that I told you.”
“Baby girl,” Liv said as she stared at me. “You should be more afraid of what Deacon would have done to you if he grabbed you instead of doing any kind of exchange.”
“Well, he isn’t getting a chance to grab her,” Justice growled. “We apologize for the brief deception, but we need a plan. We need to find a way to beat this asshole at his own game.”
Liv slowly shook her head as she scoffed. “Beat him? Where have you been, man? We might get even, Justice. If we’re lucky, but beating the man at his own game? The chances of that are so slim, that I won’t even give us odds. Saving these girls might be the only thing we can accomplish, but the odds on that aren’t too good either.”
