“Jewel, I’m not crippled, so you don’t have to help me. I’m fine.”

“When I came into that barn you were not fine, Prophet! You were flat on your back, passed out.”

“I wasn’t passed out,” he defended. “I was stunned.”

“Call it whatever you want but that’s what I saw.”

“Sweet girl, I know you don’t get it.” He removed my arm from around his waist, then took my hand in his as we walked along.

“I don’t. I really don’t. We are in a huge crisis and I come into a fight party?”

He chuckled then flinched a bit as he felt at his lip. “It was hardly a party.”

I could plainly see the cut there and the dried blood. It made me mad all over again. But I could see he wasn’t going to listen to me.

We went up the steps and the door opened.

Ma and Cinnamon stood there...Ma shook her head as Cinnamon gasped at the sight of Prophet.

“Yeah, Talon and Prophet were fighting in a ring at the barn,” I informed them.

“Heavens to Betsy,” Ma said. “You look like 10 miles of bad road, Cowboy.”

Chuckling, Prophet shook his head. “Maybe 5 miles but not 10, Ma.”

Cinnamon looked over at me. “Talon did this?”

“Look, it wasn’t really like that,” Prophet said with a small laugh. “You should see the other guy.”

“Dang it Prophet, this is not funny!” I seethed.

“Welp, let’s get you cleaned up.” Ma waved us inside.

Cinnamon stepped aside so we could pass. “I just can’t believe this!” she exclaimed.

“Well, welcome to my world,” I snapped. “But no worries, because I belted him one,” I told her.

Again, Prophet chuckled. “She smacked him alright, maybe she should have fought him instead of me.”

Ma tisked. “Talon would never hit a woman, I drilled that rule into my sons early on. But if he broke sumpthin’ him and I are gonna have a come to Jesus meeting.”

Prophet shook his head. “I got checked out by a Rebel Saint. He said nothing was broken.”

We all made our way to the kitchen.

Ma harrumphed at this. “That’s all fine and good, but you still have to pass by me.” She motioned to a chair. “Set him down there.”

“This is not necessary,” Prophet argued. “Let me go to my room and I’ll shower.”

Me and Cinnamon raised our brows at his suggestion and looked over to see Ma’s reaction.

“The heck you are,” Ma retorted. “No one who gets injured here gets past me.” She went over to a huge cabinet and opened it up.

We all looked over to see an entire clinic’s medical supply in that cabinet. Everything from gauze to syringes and small medicine bottles like hospitals used.

“So, let me guess.” Prophet smiled. “You are actually Ma, the Medicine Woman.”

She snickered. “You are cute, but that charm ain’t getting’ you outta this.” She grabbed several things and came back over.
