“Boy, did I,” I replied. “The bike tires rose from the road for a few seconds and…” I shook my head again. “...then it leaned, I don’t know if my face was a few inches from the road surface, but maybe? I simply whiteknuckled it, even though I couldn’t feel the handlebars anymore. It was like…” I didn’t even know how to describe it to them or to myself. “I couldn’t see, I couldn’t hear anything. I thought...this is it man, I’m toast. I did nothing. Actually, I could donothing. It felt like the planing lasted for an hour, even though I knew it could only have been like a minute maybe? I never experienced anything like that in my whole fucking life. It really felt like I left reality? Then the bike seemed to right itself and I gradually slowed down.”
Shocked silence in the car.
Redemption suddenly burst into laughter breaking the quiet.
Raising my gaze to him, I scowled. I didn’t think any of this was funny.
He raised his hand up when he saw my expression as he was still chuckling. “Man, I’ve seen you ride bulls and wild horses who were insane. But I cannot imagine this shit. First of all, you are a big man, Prophet and secondly, that kind of bike is lightweight compared to your bike. Only you man, only you could do something as insane as that and live.”
“I’ve known men who have tried it,” Bones commented as he drove. “Knownas in they are no longer with us.”
“That is fucking crazy.” Wildcat looked stunned as he shook his head slowly.
Redemption snickered. “When I watched him being bucked by these 3,000 pound bulls? I honestly felt afraid he would break his neck or least some bones. I, myself will ride or drive anything with two or four wheels, but not legs. Nah, man. No way.”
“You were lucky, Prophet,” Bones said.
I didn’t look at any of them. I didn’t feel lucky. I lost today, big time. Luck had been absent.
“See, that’s the thing,” Redemption went on as he explained to the other men in the SUV. “Me and the brothers used to tease him that God had to be looking after him and his dad was the smart one, naming him Prophet.”
Wildcat looked up at him. “You mean that’s his real name? Not a road name?”
Redemption nodded.
“So maybe he has a guardian angel,” Bones stated quietly.
“The fuck?” I exclaimed angrily at all their bullshit talk. “I lost my girl and my dad today. Where is this guardian angel for them?”
The men in the car had no answer.
Then Redemption spoke again, “How do you know this angel isn’t right there with them. Prophet?”
I knew what he was saying, my dad had a strong belief in God and his ways. I always tried to see it and I had to face the fact that I never could. I only hoped Redemption was right and Jewel wasn’t…I couldn’t even finish the thought. “You all seem to be forgetting who is in charge of this shitstorm from hell and if anyone is the devil, he is.”
Chapter Sixteen:Pins and Needles
Jewel
I heard footsteps moving away as they must have left the room. I still did not open my eyes.
Someone then stepped over closer to me, I think. I waited to find out who it might be.Please God, don’t let it be Deacon.
“You should not be here.” It was that Vi woman.
I agreed. I hadn’t planned to be.
“It’s your fault that we have men swarming all over this place,” she whispered in a vicious tone. “Messing up our plans.”
I laid still as I listened, what choice did I really have?
“We would be bombing the shit out of that ranch right now, instead of dealing with all of this. Nothing but lust.” She sounded disgusted.
I now had to wonder if she was Deacon’s girlfriend or—
“I should kill you right now and then he would have to do what is needed.”
Kill me?My breathing sped up a little.
