“Ok, where’s your bike?”
I glanced over at the flaming Ninja. “It’s…on fire.”
“Damn,” Talon said. “Ok, stay there. Rebels are already at your last known location on off-ramp 20. But you’ll need a vehicle.”
“Stay there,” I muttered to myself and them. Where could I go? Then it hit me. “Talon!” I shouted.
“What?”
“Did you find anything?” I asked him.
“No, just tire skid marks in that lot.”
“Yeah, I saw those and then the back of an SUV. It took off and ran from me, so it was linked to Jewel’s...” I sighed. “...kidnapping.”
“Come on Prophet, we will get her back,” he urged.
“What about her tracker?” I asked hopefully.
“No signal,” he answered.
“So they found it,” I said.
“Or, it somehow got destroyed?” he suggested.
I raised my head. “Along with her, you mean?”
“No, Deacon doesn’t want her dead,” Talon said. “Come on, man.
No, he didn’t for now. He wanted her and once he had her, then she would be dead. I shuddered. My adrenaline had been stretched for miles and now, I had crashed to earth, or hell on earth.
No Jewel, no trace, no fucking trail.
Our plan had failed. Fuck, I had failed. To top that ugly sundae mountain off with a rotten cherry, my dad could be dead too. I heard the guy on the ground next to me groan. Looking over at him, my fists clenched. I wanted to kill him, but he was my only chance now. He was the only one who knew where Jewel was. I hung my head again. My mind and body was spent.
Bike engines roared as the Rebels pulled up.
I never even raised my head as they came over to where I sat, almost slumped over.
One of them knelt down and grabbed my arm. “Damn, Prophet.”
I raised my head to look at Redemption kneeling next to me.
“You look like hell,” he said.
“I feel like hell. Fuck man, I’m in hell.”
His grasp on my arm tightened. “Look brother. I know how you feel. I lost Joanna.”
“Youalmostlost her,” I mumbled as I remembered us rescuing Cinnamon and Jewel. The best day of his life and mine.
“And you helped me to get her back.” He nodded. “This is the same. You havealmostlost Jewel. We can still find her. Your dad too. But if you sit here like a fucking lump, you won’t find either of them.”
I did feel like a lump. One that was lower than dirt. I’d ended up with nothing but a burned up bike and empty hands. No Jewel and my father was still in danger too. Now they both were.
Two of the Rebel Saints picked the injured guy up and took him over to an SUV.
I looked up at my best friend. “Help me up, Red.”
