“He hasn’t called in?” Deacon asked.
“No sir,” the man replied.
“Damnit, if he was caught…” Deacon paused. “That man is dumber than Maxim even. Shit.”
“You mean he could tell them where we are,” Vi said.
“Yes and then everyone here dies,” Deacon stated in a vengeful tone.
Everyone? Does he mean all of us? Prophet’s dad? Oh, my God. This could get even worse. And here I thought it was already as bad as it could possibly get.
“What do we do?” Vi asked. “If they are up top, we can’t move.”
“I always have a backup plan, Vi. Where have you been all these years?” Dean replied calmly.
Chapter Fifteen:Beat That Dog
Prophet
“Prophet!” Talon kept calling me over the comm.
I again didn’t answer. I could hear well now, but I did not trust my voice. My heart pounded hard in my chest as fear really took over. The wreck looked bad. Peeling to a stop, I dropped the bike on its side and rushed over to the SUV. I tried the passenger door and the handle burned me, but I didn’t care as long as it opened. I looked inside.
A man sat slumped back on the driver’s side with a deployed airbag in between him and the wheel. I leaned my head in further and looked into the backseat...Empty. I felt relieved and disappointed at the same time. I’d lost Jewel, but not to this crash, thank fuck. I swung my gaze over to the guy. Blood trickled down from his head and splintered glass had cut his face up pretty badly. I hoped he was alive, so I could get him to tell me where the fuck Jewel was, and then I would kill him.
I climbed in as I knew the driver’s side had no way in. That was where the smattering sparks were coming from. I reached over to tug at him. Then my brain finally clicked in….he was trapped where he sat. I dug into my pocket to retrieve my jackknife. A loud spark arched and fire now flamed from the hood along with the smoke. Fuck, I’d better move quick. I popped the airbag and reached over to undo his seat belt. A kidnapping thug with safety awareness. I scoffed at the irony as I tugged him out.
More flames rose as I plopped his body over my shoulder as the air whooshed from his lungs and I hurried to the other side of the road. A loud boom sounded out and the force of it knocked me off my feet. Dropping the guy, we both landed in the dirt.
“Fuck Prophet, are you alive?” Talon’s voice went off in my ear again.
Breathing heavily, I rose up on my hands and replied breathlessly, “Barely.”
“Thank fuck!” Hawk’s relieved voice came over.
“What the hell happened?” Talon asked.
I sat up and turned my head to see that the SUV and my bike were both burning. “H-hell happened,” I replied out of breath. “No Jewel in that lot but I—” I tried to slow my breathing and spoke again, “Chased a vehicle.”
“What vehicle?” Talon asked.
“The one…” I leaned over as my head spun “...Jewel was in.”
“And?” Talon questioned again.
“Chased…and wrecked.”
“You wrecked?” Talon asked.
I lowered my head and said, “SUV did.” I wouldn’t tell them of my near death experience. Who the fuck cared?
“Man...was Jewel…” His voice slowed as if he didn’t want to actually say the words.
My head shot up as I growled out, “No. She wasn’t in it, but I got the fucker driving it.”
“Is he alive?” Talon asked.
I blinked my eyes and wiped some blood from my cheek as I leaned over to check the guy for a pulse. He had one. “For now. C-come get me.”
