I could feel my face heating up even though he hadn’t done anything but look at me. Unfortunately, that seemed to be all it took with him lately. Cyrus chuckled, shaking his head and not looking nearly as murderous as he had before. “Don’t distract me.”
I wasn’t sure I wanted to agree with that order, so I tried to look innocent as I randomly picked up what turned out to be a small device that helped people search for hidden cameras. That went quickly back on the shelf, which got another laugh from Cyrus. “Not what we’re aiming for.”
No.
And I didn’t have the self-control to have it in the house and not use it.
“What do you think about that one?” Giving myself a moment to think, I listened to him explain the features of the tiny camera and let my thoughts roll around in the back of my head.
When he’d done his best to fill the silence for me, I nodded slowly and inched closer so I could whisper quietly. “I want the teddy bear one for now. I like that one and it’s…it’s going to make me squirm to see it on the dresser.”
It went a bit too well with his cutesy tone, and his wicked grin said he knew it. But we both managed to stay quiet and I didn’t look too squirmy at the moment, so it was fine. Cyrus couldn’t resist fucking with me, though. “We’re going to have to give him a name so you can be polite in the morning.”
He was evil.
“Something…” Closing my eyes, I refused to back down. “Something sweet and innocent sounding. That will…that’ll make it even…better, I guess.”
Naughtier?
His chuckle said he knew what I was trying to say, but the deep sound was already enough to have me fighting off a shiver, so he made an agreeing sound and stopped his fuckery. When I was under control again, he kept his response simple. “Alright. I’ll buy the rest online and we’ll take the bear home today.”
God.
That actually made me lightheaded but I didn’t want to give the crazy weirdo anything else to obsess over, so I forced myself to stand straighter and open my eyes. Cyrus was very pleased with himself and that was sexy too, so I had to look away…which made him even cockier.
He was such an asshole.
Just a sexy one.
“Light brown, dark brown, or almost black?” Setting the stupidly expensive camera down, he steered me back over to the teddy bears and sneaky toys, using his body to block the weird guy’s view of me. “Which one do you think will work best?”
Which one did I like best?
Which one would make me feel the squirmiest?
“Light brown.” It was the cutest. “It’ll match the rest of the room.”
Technically that was correct but it hadn’t sounded like I was talking aboutmyroom. Cyrus nodded slowly, picking up the box and giving the store one last glance. “We’re good to go then.”
I was going to argue about who was paying for all the camera stuff later, but I let Cyrus handle it for the moment so we could get out of there quicker. The guy kept his thoughts to himself and actually stayed as far away from us as he could manage, but there was no way we were getting everything else there and I was glad when we escaped.
“Okay, so set up for aCriminal Mindsepisode?” Once we’d finally made it out to the car, I didn’t feel the need to be nice any longer.
“Definitely.” Cyrus glanced back at the store. “I’m leaving a review.”
That was his version of being a dick, so I knew he was pissed…and adorable.
“That was weird.” Right? “Was I doing anything odd?”
Had I been the weird one to begin with?
“No.” Shaking his head, Cyrus leaned over and gave me a quick peck. “You were quiet and in your own head, but nothing that seemed weird.Introvert in a new locationvibes but that’s it.”
“Every store has that one weird employee, I guess.” We’d run into a few over the past couple of years. “That waitress at the pancake restaurant we used to go to. She was weird too.”
We’d stopped goinglevel of weird.
“Some people just aren’t meant for public.” Cyrus shrugged. “But we’re not going to let it derail our plans even if he fucked with your headspace.”
