Though I watch these events unfold before me, I allow the numbness to take hold of me. Even seeing my family again doesn’t stir the feelings that they should.
To my surprise, Magnus is the first to relax his stance. “I call armistice,” he speaks loud enough for everyone around him to hear while maintaining eye contact with the Sector 10 Leader.
My new master curves his lips with a snarl, before lowering his hand. His eyes which had turned a deep rich amber were now bright blue once again. He looks to his right at his Enforcer. “Stand down.”
“My apologies for allowing matters to get out of hand. Hopefully this incident can be forgiven once you’ve been given time to think it over. I don’t want the relationship we’ve established to cease because of this.”
Sector Leader 10 flares his nostrils. But he gives a nonverbal grunt and a nod in response.
Magnus turns to my sister and strokes her cheek. “You could have gotten hurt interfering in such a matter. I need you to take better care of yourself.” His words are stern but gentle.
Noah buries her head against his chest. “I don’t want you to get hurt either Our child deserves to grow up with their father.”
Magnus chuckles. “Have you so little faith in my ability to defend myself, woman?”
“Of course not, but I don’t want you to take the risk either” She pulls away from me and throws her attention toward Sector Leader 10.
“I don’t understand why you need to leave so soon, but could you at least give us ten minutes to talk to my sister? Please,” Noah tearfully begs.
The black-haired beast doesn’t speak right away and for a moment I think he will ignore her but instead he gives another grunt. “I gave her the opportunity to speak with her family before we took our leave. She declined.”
Noah shoots a tearful glance my way but I turn my back to her. I can’t do this right now. “That’s not true is it?” Her voice trembles and her bottom lip quivers.
I’m sure the pregnancy hormones are making her more emotional than usual and I don’t want to add to her stress. But if I allow my family to embrace me and make a production out of my departure, I will break.
I continue to focus on the numb.
“It’s best if we leave without any complication.”
“Complications? What are you talking about?” My mother interjected drawing closer to me.
I flinch away from her touch when she reaches out to me.
“What’s gotten into you Jamie?” My father demands.
I take a deep breath to stave away the panic that is about to set. “You all came down to see me off and say goodbye. Well this is goodbye. I hope you all can be happy and I wish you a safe delivery, Noah.”
I then turn my back to them not wanting to see the hurt on their faces. I’m sure they’re disappointed in me but there are far worse things than suffering from that. They will eventually get over it and will soon forgot about me.
I don’t know if any of them would have replied because at that moment a car pulls up.
“Come on, Jameshia,” my master grunts over his shoulder expecting me to follow him, which is exactly what I do.
His Enforcer opens the door for me and as I’m about to get in, Noah grabs my arm. “Jamie, please don’t leave like this. I don’t know what we’ve done to upset you but please know that no matter what, we love you and hopefully we can see each other again soon.”
My lips curve into a joyless smile as I turn to face her one last time. “I’m glad you still have hope, Noah. Hold on to it for as long as you can because when it’s gone, you might as well be dead.”

JAMIE
Ishut out the cries of my sister and parents. I’ve hurt them but it couldn’t be help. It’s better this way. There was a time when I would have longed for my mother’s warm embrace and the positive affirmations my father used to say to me. I wanted desperately to laugh with my sister. I’d even missed our playful banter where sometimes she teased me relentlessly when we were kids.
There was a time when I would have given anything to have those moments back. But those were simply the silly dreams of a young girl who had lived in a world that was just an illusion. I’d learned reality was way grimmer for a regular homo sapien like myself.
I’m glad that my family had gained some level of peace, I really am. But their happiness can only last as long as Magnus stays strong. If he’s challenged and killed by someone stronger than him, that person would be the new Sector 2 Leader. And then what? They’d most likely be reassigned, killed, or maybe even worse…
